Build a program which enables people to change certain aspects of their iAudio player on their own. For instance, add format support, create and edit languages, change menu order and commands, handle bitrates, and so on (in multiple choice menu).
Make it a non-supported piece of software, with an explicit announcement on the opening window that says: "Use this at your own risk. Using this program voids your warranty as it changes the software inside your player and Cowon can not be held accountable for any consequences"
You'll keep releasing New firmware - mostly for new features and bug fixes, but this will get all the real enthusaists "off your back" with their pesky questions and demands..

Microsoft has done this to a degree with its power toys.

sounds a bit like Neuros's open source firmware.
this seems a bit harder to implement, for programming reasons.
i could see this as a function in Jetshell of Jetaudio or sumtin'...

best case scenario: cowon sets up a "requests" forum for its firmware
