X5 Skin Release Thread (original Firmware)

Hello, everyone,

The purpose of this thread is to divert some of the skin-posting from the huge Hacking& Modding and H3Mod thread and for people to post their own skins here so it will be much easier to find than scrolling through the 19 pages there.

To Avoid clutter, please use this only for posting your skinpacks, or perhaps instructions/FAQs related to skinpack, please still use Hacking&Modding for discussions about H3Mod and technical details of making skinpacks, until we have a sub-forum dedicated to this subject.

Update- Mar 13 2006

We have a new dedicated forum now, please divert comments and questions to individual skin threads. Comments DO NOT belong here...

Anyone with better suggestions about how to organize this please speak up!:blah:

A note for Skinpack authors: Use the preview or take a photo to show off your skin, give credit where credit is due, and specify if you need to use external bookmarks (if you are modifying the startup loading bar fill and/or the volume bar fill, then you need to use updated external bookmark, otherwise you are fine with built-in one in H3Mod)

Default How to use skinpacks

Warning
I have to add that every modification of firmware is a risk, and I can
take no responsibility if the use of H3Mod causes any damage. This
is mostly for legal reasons, the tool has already been tested and works.
~ Lord Julius
Same apply for everything you found in this thread

What do I need:
a functional X5(L) 20/30/60GB
Official firmware file of your choosing(X5_fw.bin)
H3mod by Lord Julius
direct Link here

Skinpack file (e.g. **.h3skin, thats what you download here)
External bookmark file if required (bookmarks 2.10b7.h3x)

Procedure:
- Open H3mod
- Open original firmware with H3mod (menu:firmware->load...)
- If skinpack does not required external bookmark, skip to next step, otherwise make sure you have Menu:Bookmark->Advanced mode checked then load the bookmark file (menu:bookmark->load...).
- Load skinpack (menu:Skin->load pack...)
- Click OK on the newly appeared windows
- Now bitmaps in your firmware should be updated (check). You can use F2 and F3 to show preview. Note that the preview only gives you a general idea and does not reflect exact appearance of the skin on X5.
- save firmware as X5_fw.bin
- Update X5 with modded X5_fw.bin (follow the normal procedure of updating firmware)
- Pray that nothing bad happens

What if I don't like it
To remove modded firmware, simply update your X5 with official firmware.

Updates:
Mar. 13 2005 -
X5V is also supported in the newest version of H3Mod. Instruction is simplified if the skinpack doesnt use external bookmarks (right now most of them don't i think) since you will NOT need to enable advanced mode in H3mod nor do you need to load bookmarks, you just need to load the firmware then skinpack and it should work.

Thanks for creating this thread, Tim. Here's my contribution. This is my first attempt. I hope I got everything right. It's another red skin based on some of Konechiwa's images modified to blend with a wallpaper that I've been using for some time. I found the wallpaper in another post on this forum - thanks to whoever posted it, used the PaintShop template that joye posted some time ago, and then modified it some more to my tastes. Anyway, now that the credits are done here are the files

There are two zip files : the skin file is for the latest Beta firmware and uses the modified bookmarks that Tim posted above. It should work with other fiirmware versions as well. The jpg file is the wallpaper that matches the skin. The only problem I've found is that the 3D look for the Digital AV slightly distorts the FM Radio screen but I'm willing to live with this since I spend most of my time with the AV and not the radio. Hope someone else enjoys this

BTW - I'm since using the same modified bookmarks that Tim posted above, rather than repost them you can grap them from there.

Tim, I quite like your creation

ya1950, does the text show up ok on that background?

I take it you can put original firmware back on, incase you have to send to Cowon?

The text shows up ok - sort of pinkish. It's clearer on a solid background but definately readable.
You would have to reflash the machine before you return it.

Superb, Tim. I would love to see a graphite version if it's not too much to ask.

//EDIT//
I think this wallpaper kicks ass in combo with Tim's CleanBlue theme, so here it is:

good skin work guys, and your eq setting is exactly same as mine .

CleanBLue is my favey.
Is there going to be a way to change the main loading screen? I dont like the blue.
I'll also try to make my own black skin.

I wish Iaudio created a cooler looking interface, like this :

Yeah, the built in graphics are disappointing... namely the fonts. My cell phone has better fonts and it is by no means a bigger or better screen (samsung e105).

To dzynz, Cowon-phile, netring: Milk and Graphite theme are possible but with limitations. Startup screen is not changable (yet) so it'd have to stay blue, sorry.

The reason why I chose blue and why it worked is because some of the color in firmware is not changable (yet), and most of them are blue-themed (e.g. menu colors), so while it is possible to bring in Milk/Graphite colors, it would not seem so unified since the menu will still be blue, not until we figured out how to change menu colors. I'll experiment with other colors and see what I can come up with...
Thats a cool wallpaper you got there Cowon-phile.

On a sidenote, please try keep this thread as clutter-less as possible like this, so if you have questions, use PM if you can, thanks:bigsmile: .
