Anyone use their X5 for FLAC files???

I have a large collection of live music that I've downloaded from www.archive.org, mostly full length concerts. All of these files were downloaded in lossless formats. Most of these shows are soundboard shows or matrix of AUD and soundboard. Needless to say the sound on these shows is amazing..

I have been looking at the X5 60G as a way to have these show portable - I will [don't want to, but will look into] not convert these shows to MP3's. :thumbsdow

Does anyone out there use the X5 for FLAC files - please relate your experiences with this DAP and FLAC files. I'm hopeing that this is the ticket.....

TIA

ScotE

You won't feel any difference between FLAC and a good MP3 encode (i.e --preset standard or -V 2 --vbr-new, or above). Especially not with live shows.

OTOH, FLAC works with all qualities on the X5... so choose between space and esoteric feeling of superior/inferior sound.

FLAC needs more battery life.

Thanks

I'll have to look into and research the "advanced" MP3 encoding - this is something new to me and interesting - looks like there might be a bit of information here on this site I need to read....

Thanks again!:notworthy

This is a very good place to start reading about audio encoding: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/...=ST&f=5&t=7516
And here's the forum for lossless codecs: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/...p?showforum=19

Encoding - thanks!

Well, I have to admit that I have dismissed out-of-hand any non-lossless formats out of pure "not-knowing"..I have always assumed that all of the MP3 formats were the same...I am going to read up and learn :bigthumbs .

I am still going to buy an X5 60 gig DAP - as a matter of fact I'm going to go to New Egg right after I post this....
