sami subtitle files on internet

I tried using the smi file which I converted from ssa through the software, on my A2. It showed xxx.smi on the file browser in the folder which contained xxx.avi. But surprisingly it didnt play along with the movie, although the subtitle option is turned ON in the setup.:confused:

Any clues ??....

Is there any internet source to download smi files. Most of the movies that I get from internet have xxx.srt files. I dont know why cowon only support xxx.smi ?

Cos Cowon is a Korean brand and in Korea they use mainly .smi files for subs?

Anyway what software're u using to convert the .ssa file? Is the name of ur newly converted .smi file identical to the movie file (minus the extension of course...)?

The name of both movie and subtitle files is same. And I used subtitleedit "SE18" program to convert. Thanks for responding

Make sure you upgrade to the latest firmware, subtitle support is suposed to have been improved.

And next, could you post your smi file here? We could take a look at it and test it too. I'm no expert in the smi file format but for simple subtitles, the format is quite straightforward so I should at least be able to spot obvious errors.

BTW smi files are plain text so if in doubt you can always open them in your favorite text editor and do a quick check to make sure they're all alright.

Your smi file looks good except that it doesn't contain a css language class. I suppose the smi file format must consider that a default but the A2 obviously does not.

I suggest you use another converter that uses the language classes properly. If you want to use the smi file you currently have, you can modify them easily by following the steps below:

Add the css language class
make all paragraph tags use the language class

To do that open your smi file in your favorite text editor (notepad will do).

Item 1 is achieved by changing line 12 from:

You can adjust this of course if your language is not english. For example it could be:

What if the language is not English or French, but Swedish. How should I change the .smi file then? Is it even possible?

Sure.

A smi file is a simple text file, open it in notepad and start translating

The tags are part of the format but what content you place in the <p> tags can be in any language, provided the file encoding supports it of course. With UTF8 you can support pretty much anything. Note by the way that the references "ENGLISHCC" and "FRENCHCC" are completely arbitrary. They are css class names and are used for referencement. You could use a reference name like "THISMOVIESTINK" and it would still work, provided you'd place the same reference in the P tags too.

The smi format even support multiple subtitles in one file like below:

SO you could have English + Swedish for example in one file. However I couldn't get that working in the A2

. I opened another thread about that here.

Note also that so far it seems many character sets are not supported in the A2: french accents, german umlaut, etc. so I don't know how sweedish would render on the A2... I don't have more details about that.

I don't know about converters for windows but I use subs in Gentoo and it takes care of the language class just nice.

what about chinese? can A2 display chinese smi subtitles? I convert a srt file to smi using subtitle workshop 2.5. But A2 can not display chinese subtitle properly. Anyone has any idea about these?

Yes, the A2 can display Chinese subtitles.
You have to change the coding system before.

Go to:
Setup-Display-Appearence-System Language
And set this item to the appropriate coding system (Big5 or GB2312)

Thanks hsvong, but i have set the interface language to chinese, but still can not display properly. my firmware version is 1.51c. I think the problem is smi file format itself. should I put something like <P Class=chineseCC> manually in the file?
