Default Newbie Question

Hello!
I have 20GB X5 for 3 months. Just got a laptop and I use it also as an external HDD. I was wondering, are all these folders in necessary? I only need a music, a video and one more folder for other use. So here comes the question..

If I format it, put the firmware can I manage which folders to exist

Another question is.. I keep my X5 connected to my always-on laptop for several days in a row.. does it also charge? Cause when I took it off sometime I noticed that the battery was full. Then I used it for some hours, plugged-in the laptop again for a few days, took it off and battery was full again?

Does anyone know where I can find a zcover in Finland?

Btw, excellent recording! Captured Armin Van Buuren's 3+ hours set at 128Kbps via mic and sounds great!!

If you reformat the drive, and restart the X5, it will create the directories it needs. You shouldn't remove the directories the X5 creates. However, you can add and delete your own directories.

The X5 will charge via the USB if the the X5 is switched off, I believe but more slowly than via the charger. It won't charge if the X5 is on or connected as a drive (or at least if it is charging, it is charging even slower).

Search for a zCover on eBay. Probably.

You can try to make the folders you don't need into 'hidden folders'. Don't know if that works on the X5, but on Windows you wouldn't see the folders anymore.

Through the USB-cable, but your X5 won't charge - only if you disconnect it will charge.
But at least the battery doesn't drain while connected to the computer.

That's fine for me. So, if I take the HD off the X5 when the warranty is overm will I be able to make it work just by connecting it to the USB, without any power supply? Did anybody succesfully change the HD of a X5 with a bigger one? If this is possible, I would like to do the same.. 20GBs are not enough for me anymore..

Yes, there's a thread about it. Use the search function.

you can charge the x5 through USB but you'd have to change the settings for it to do that. otherwise it just stays connected as a drive. it also can't be accessed while it's charging through USB.

Any laptop hard drives should work, the only problem is finding one that fits. I was considering swapping the drive in my 20GB X5, but I think I'm going to wait until my warranty expires and the hard drive prices go down. If you want to replace it, I think its only a matter of carefully dismantling the X5, removing the x5 from the ribbon adapter and putting the new one in.

Yes, I guess a perpendicular 80GB-HDD fits, as long as it only uses one platter internally. Now Cowon has to overcome the 10.000 file limit for the X5-firmware, so that this huge HDD actually becomes useful.

EDIT: No, this HDD doesn't work, on Toshiba's specifications-page it says 'Number of disks: 2'.
