Default FLAC and firmware questions from a newbie

Hi,

New member here. Just received my 30GB X5L yesterday.

First thing I did, after completely charging the unit, was to dowload the newest firmware (version 2.10 beta 5) to the "firmware" folder. Followed the manual instruction to do so. My question is, how can I make sure I did it correctly? Is this shown in the display somehow?

I have been compressing my music as FLAC files. The files appear in the iAudio X5L screen as (for example): Tom Sawyer.wav Pardon my ignorance, but I was expecting each of those files to read ".flac" rather than ".wav". Did I do something wrong when compressing those files?

Thanks in advance for any help!

when you turn it on, the firmware version should be on the bottom right. You can also get this via Menu --> Settings --> Information.

[Edit] As for the flac vs. wav, the extention leads me to believe that you ripped to wav and not flac. My experience leads me to conclude on the average a flac file should give you almost 50%-60% compression over wav.

Yeah it should say Tom Sawyer.flac. You ripped to wav.
