Bought D3 but now im sending it back, some of the reasons are below.
Slow performance Android not fully functional (i.e no marketplace without hack) Volume too low (even with BBE setting changed) Cannot multifunction with Radio playing Screen too dim outdoors Hold function does not disable external buttons Motion sensor is slow to pick up change of direction and adjust screen accordingly for the price i expected a lot more and am very disappointed Im thinking about getting a J3 so will check out the reviews over in that forum |

Volume too low (even with BBE setting changed) - Cowon players is renowned as the one of most the loudest DAP in the market. What headphone or earphone you are using? Have you ever tried another pair of earphones? Cannot multifunction with Radio playing -It is a bit confusing, That means you want to listen to the radio while playing games? Screen too dim outdoors - It is common for every AMOLED screen. It is a set back when you've got the best screen technology on your hand. (I assumed that Samsung SAMOLED+ had fixed this problem?) It happens on the J3 & S9 too. Hold function does not disable external buttons - Isn't there a option you can turn this function off? I've got this option on my S9 I think the selling point of D3 is sound quality plus some modern smartphone function. Sound quality is always a D3 or any Cowon DAP potential buyers' first priority, most of the problems are bearable as long as they got a good sound out of it =) Im thinking about getting a J3 so will check out the reviews over in that forum -Most of the problem you got is not solely exist on D3. Some of the problem did happen on both J3 & S9 (like Screen too dim when watching it outdoor) Last edited by aysheep; 06-29-2011 at 22:47.. |

Sound volume level could also be region specific, I believe the europe one has a max decibel output limit by law, and its all devices.
But the gingerbread firmware, except for market access, addresses most of your issues, you can even calibrate the g sensor. Last edited by pico; 06-30-2011 at 04:21.. |

I am with Pico on the volume , try a non eu such as North America firmware. I just had to do the same thing with my Sansa clip and install NA firmware. The external speaker on the cowon is duff but i don't think they ever intended it to be used for more than reference. It sounds great through a x mini though. I have given this player it's fair share of criticism over the months however i think it is getting there and I am awaiting the full release of the Eu update to ginger. The sound and vid quality are however fantastic IMO.

Have you ever tried another pair of earphones? I'm using a pair of Shure Ec2 which are loud enought when connected to my iAudio X5, also tried some Sennheiser earbuds and still quieter than the X5 Cannot multifunction with Radio playing -It is a bit confusing, That means you want to listen to the radio while playing games? yes i want to listen to the radio and maybe browse facebook or look at pictures etc. Screen too dim outdoors - It is common for every AMOLED screen. For the loudness complaint, I have the same issues if I'm not using the default music player. For some reason, third-party players are significantly lower in volume, for reasons unknown.
It's generally not a big issue since I use a headphone amp with it, but it's just something I noticed.

At almost £200 for the MP3 player i don't want to have to buy a headphone amp just to get a decent sound level!! that's just madness. I will try the suggestions of updating to the NON-EU Firmware and then try the Gingerbread. Can this FW be downgraded? I don't want to send it back to the supplier with Non-EU or gingerbread FW. |

The Gingerbread update is a one-way street. Once you have it on there, tmk there's no way to go back to the older firmware.
It's probably possible, but Cowon would need to supply a way to do that and so far they haven't done so. As for your current f/w issues, is this the 2.1 firmware to a newer 2.1 firmware? As I recall, you just need to drop the ZIP into the root of the internal memory or microSD, and then run the system update. EDIT: About the volume, I pulled out my old Sennheiser earbuds and used no amp (I think they're 16 Ohm). Standard music player is pretty loud - enough so that I can't go to 50 without it hurting my ears, 40 is about the max for me. In Rockbox (third party app), I think the volume is down about 10. So its 50 is about the same as the default player's 40 - that's my perception, anyway. This is with the 1.5.3 GB firmware, btw.
