Flac. I use level 8, but the difference in compression size is negligable from 6-8. For lossy files, I find ogg at q7 to be transparent.

Yes, I find OGG -q7 to be absolutely perfect for my ears. Quality 6 is okay too though. If you want to use MP3 used LAME's standard and extreme presets, becuase they are designed to be transparent with the smallest size possible. NEVER use WMA.

Interesting, while I am currently using Ogg level 6, I have always found WMA 192 to be far more musical than lame alt preset anything. To me, lame is somehow more atificial than WMA.

How does the file compression size of Ogg compare to MP3; also, is MP3 192 bitrate that much better than 128?

At low bitrates, say 64 to 128 kbps, ogg sounds much better than mp3 of the same bitrates, and if the bitrates are the same, then the file size is the same. Once you get above 192 kbps, especially VBR, there isn't that much difference between the two in terms of sound quality, at least IMO.

As far as 192 kbps mp3 being that much better than 128 kpbs mp3 - it's up to you. If you hear a big difference, then to you it is. For me, the difference is big. I can't stand a 128 kbps mp3. On the other hand, a 128 kbps ogg is quite OK.

Is there a battery life toll if one uses FLAC instead of LAME CBR?

Thanks!

Its lossless, meaning uncompressed. No quality loss when ripped from CD.

IMHO, OGG, but since the scene standard is VBR MP3, that's what a lot of my music is (stuff I've ripped myself is FLAC).

Flac is just as good as a CD, but more portable...

Everybody keeps mentioning VBR...variable bitrate..ok what advantages does this have over constant or average? I burn all of my mp3s to 320 bitrate and constant CBR. Flac files are just too big and I cannot tell the difference between the sound. I have 19 gigs of 320 CBR and flac would be space consuming.

Uh no. There is lossy compression and there is lossless compression. Uncompressed is always lossless. FLAC is lossless compression meaning it occupies less space than uncompressed, but does not throw away any data.

Yeah, is 320 CBR Stereo LAME better than --alt preset extreme? I.E Joint-Stereo Mid-High Quality Variable bit rate
