I got my new S9 a week ago and after fooling around with the BBE settings, I find it totally useless. Either the effects are not noticeable or totally unrealistic. It sounds more like a gimmick then anything else. I also have a Samsung P3 and their DNS3 is way better and more natural. So I settle for POP setting which is not very good but at least more realistic. Btw is there a way to modify that setting to add more bass ? I can't replicate it with the BBE user mode.
I have a set of decent JBL earbuds so, not the greatest but good enough with the P3. So does most of you use BBE ? |

BBE is the best sound enhancement for portable devices IMO.
And you don't even notice a difference. ![]()

Yes I do noticed a difference with the settings but they sound unnatural instead of improving the music.
Ok may be it's just me .... |

I guess its a matter of personal taste, but as DNW I havent heard any better sound enchantments yet (though I havent tried that any). If I add too much BBE (the stand alone setting) I think it sounds unnatural, same with most other settings, but when using them carefuly they really enchanse my music experience. BBE and jeteffects were absolutley one of the reasons for me whe I bought my S9.
But as allways, headphones and ones unique ears plays a big part.

I do find enhancement in terms of sound when I increase the BBE value (around 8-9).

Are you using the stock buds? That's could very be the reason as they suck totally! Best grab some "good" headphones like yuin PK3's or better and you should hear a difference. To me, I like to cram as much music that I can on my Cowon S9 so I'm not a purist and grab all my music in FLAC, but in compressed mp3 files. It's a matter of opinion of course but I compress my music I rip or have to 192kps CBR and I'm happy with it being a good middle ground, still sounds great to me. It could be due to me grabbing better headphones instead of the crappy stock buds and BBE really makes a difference in making my music sound better especially since it's not lossless or HIGH kps mp3's. I've listened to/tested some mp3 players and the only thing that even gets somewhat close to Cowon S9's technology that enhances the music is maybe Samsung's P3 as other just sound to "airy" (is that even a word?) I personally find either Viva 1 or Headphones 1 sounding the best when it comes to making my music sound better. You can of course tweak your own settings and find that sweet spot that makes your music sing but everyone can agree that BBE is probably the best sound enhancing technology there is [especially for a portable device], sound studios will agree as well and recommend too.
P.S. I will state that I can hear the difference between 128kps file from a 192kps file but anything higher than 192kps gets really hard for me to distinguish and I'm sure I'm not alone on this (exception to lossless, I CAN hear the difference as well but prefer stuffing as much music that I can instead of having LARGE file sizes). BBE doesn't help matters either and makes the decision even harder IMO...

you have to find a balance. don't turn it up all the way if you think it's overdone, but don't leave it off if you're looking for good bass. you need to go through EVERY SINGLE SETTING in the eq, figure out which area of sound it's modifying, and find out where you want that sound. customize until it sounds amazing. do NOT use the presets.
I repeat: do NOT use the presets. ever. EVER. on any player. ever. ever. and until you follow that rule, don't ever complain about the custom settings. ever.

I agree with the above responses. The stock earbuds are probably for the purpose of immediate hearing. Other than that if you're using the stock buds for general purposes.. you're killing S9's sound quality

For instance, I'll put on some Michael Hedges (solo instrumental acoustic guitar) and it sounds far more like a actual guitar then a recording. The technology behind the BBE function is really quite inteligent, I recomend giving it a look: http://www.bbesound.com/technologies...DS/BBE_HDS.pdf I think that it has to be used wisely though, improper amounts may lessen your listening experience, with my EQ though, I find it to be immensely helpful (on either 9 or 10).

Stock buds = bad idea. If you want realism with the BBE, you have to shell out for good headphones that have synergy with the S9.

![]() People do have different tastes and it just to happens that the OP dislikes the BBE enhancements for their unnatural flavor. The S9 is indeed a very cold and analytical DAP, known for its clinical, slightly digital sound compared to, let's say, a Sony X series DAP.
