I have the vanilla X5 20GB. Yesterday, during a long train trip, I had it running for about three hours without pause and it suddenly started acting weird. Each song would play for about 2 minutes, then switch to the previous song for the rest of the track duration. ID3-tag info was still shown of the correct track.

Imagine it like this:

Listen to track-01.mp3 (everything fine)
Listen to track-02.mp3 (everything fine for the first 2 minutes)
I'm now hearing track-01.mp3 again, while seeing the id3-tag info for track-02.mp3
Listen to track-03.mp3 (everything fine for first 1:54)
Same again: I'm hearing track-02.mp3 while seeing id3 for track-03
etc.

After changing tracks and directory this still happened, always at the same second in the track. Even turning the device off an on again didn't cure it. Only running a video file and then going back to mp3 files made it behave normaly again. I haven't been able to reproduce this weird bug today.

I have the lastest non-beta firmware on it.

Has anyone else experienced something like this?

Try putting the beta firmware on there and report back.

I think I'll try and reproduce it with the current version first. Just to make sure. If I succeed in reproducing the error, I'll go ahead and try the same with 2.10

Hate to say it, but in a worst-case scenario it could be indicative of a HD issue.

Dunno if you've physically ripped those mp3 from a CD or whatever yourself? In case you've used some unconvential ripping software for all your MP3s, it might be the encoding of your files that screws things up. Not likely, but just making sure here.

OK, so I've narrowed it down a bit. The problem is reproducible. Apparently there one single mp3 file that causes this weird behaviour. I can play whatever I want, and it's fine, but as soon as I listen to 'Evanescence - Bring me to Life.mp3', my X5 starts acting weird as described above. After playing that song, every other song acts equally weird. Playing a video file returns the X5 to normal operation again.

So this evening, I'm going to do the following:

Move the file to some other directory on the X5, and see if the problem persists.
Then rename the file and see if it changes anything.
Move the file to my computer and check in Linux and WinXP if there's something weird with it.
Rename another file to the same name as the problem file and see if the problem still appears with the new file.
Maybe drop the problem file on a server somewhere, so that other X5 owners can check if they also have the same effects.

Oh sorry, I just meant the standard X5, no frills like L or bigger HD or anything. Just as normal as can be, like vanilla ice cream.

So, I've started on my test series and found some weird things.

It's definitely the file. When I move it, it still has the same effect, also when I rename it. However, I can't move it or copy it to my computer. WinXP claims the file is corrupted. Funny thing is, I can move it and rename it on the X5. Can't copy it on the X5 however. If I open it with Winamp using the X5 as an external HD, it also refuse to play. The first 1:56 play on the X5 however.

Further wierdness: When it jumps back to the last song I was listening to, the id3 info stays with the original file info, and even stranger: The graphical equalizer bars on the display still twitch in time with the original song, as if it were still playing. It's like the X5's display is still playing the problem file, while the audio chipset is playing the last one.

Mucho weirdo mp3 file.

Did you encode the file yourself? If so, I'd suggest a redo.

Good thing it's not the player. Just re-encode or re-rip the bad files.

Yes, re-ripping will probably do the trick. I'm glad it's nothing wrong with my X5. But still, it's weird. That was one of the first albums I had on the player, and it worked fine until last weekend.
