Default Rockbox and Warranty

I just got my D2+ and it is great player and I want to use rockbox on it. But, with just getting the D2 I don’t really want to throw away my warranty, and I know that Cowon will say that Rockbox will void my warranty. But, has anyone ever been denied repair on their D2 because it had rockbox on it?

I haven't heard of this happening with a D2, but Cowon have certainly refused to repair Rockbox'd X5s in the past. All I can say is, if voiding the warranty is a concern to you, you probably shouldn't install Rockbox.

EDIT: Found this

Quote:
This warranty does not apply: (a) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, misapplication, or non-COWON America, Inc. products; (b) to damage caused by service performed by anyone other than COWON America, Inc.; (c) to a product or a part that has been modified without the written permission of COWON America, Inc.; or (d) if any COWON America, Inc. serial number has been removed or defaced.
They could choose to invoke the above rule, but only if they knew you had "modified" the player.

Of course, there are certainly ethical issues involved in deliberately withholding the fact that you modified the player from Cowon.

But Cowon must be aware that the D2's hackability is an attractive feature of it. Its one that I considered when buying it.
There is also (afaik) no history of D2s getting ruined by putting Rockbox on them. So perhaps you just have to ask nicely?

(You could of course write to them and ask for the written permission mentioned in 'c', but when they say 'no' they might also hold you to it later)

Well, Cowon can only provide warranty for things they have control over. If we start doing things with their players that they never originally intended, we shouldn't expect them to support us. So it is up to you whether to take the "risk".

We went through all this back when RB for the X5 was released...lie to Cowon or not as you see fit, the bottom line from where I'm sitting is there's no blanket policy regarding whether Cowon will still honor the warranty if you use RB, but you shouldn't expect them to. And that's pretty much all the discussion I personally want to have on the matter.

Okay, maybe I wasn't clear. We're not going to talk about -how- to lie to Cowon here.

We're done.
