Thx for you reply, I'll try that this evening...
But I think it's kind of a compatibility issue there (IDE SATA3/4 vs IDE SATA 7) as windows won't even want to format it (i know it wouldn't be good but though it seems not be really recognized...) Maybe 1231 is not a good choice after all ^^' |

I've seen the A2 workout...but there's the connecting issue there we don't have with the IDE/ZIF in the A3 (maybe the problem is that all IDE/ZIF aren't the same : cf ATA3/4 and ATA7) : I wouldn't go in such extreme wiring and stuff myself ^^
About windows, it "sounds" when i connect the A3 with the 120gb hdd, i can see the letter in the explorer, it even ask to format...which I tried and gave up because it took ages to get the window and it didn't really launch any formating (just to try) I even got a size of the HDD with a right click....but got (once) a size of 25 gb or something... I've seen it in the disk manager too with wrong size and no partition of course (in black) I'm under win 7 64 bits btw. I tried under xp but didn't get any better (fat32format gave me a different message : "can't find device geometry") So I think it's a compatibility problem between A3 and the HDD (which bears the apple mark on it ^^). With these issues, i feel that linux won't help and i have to say it looks really complicated for a non linux user like me to do it even with the tuto... |

Ok. I tried gparted, fat32format and I can't get any result : they don't see the HDD (even if the A3 is shown in the lists of devices in this progs...)
My guess is that this HDD is one for ipods (the apple is shown on it) and then is locked and can't be formatted... So I have to find a 1231gal non-"apple prepared" (if it exists. But there are some pics of 1231 without the apple, so...). But maybe it won't work either... Anyway I can't find how to format that beast, i can't find anything on google to over ride this lock...too bad ! |

Yes i have !
I really tried what i could do...and i've even asked gadgetdoctor.com about this issue and they told me they never succeded in overiding the apple partitioning neither... So I have sent back the HDD and plan to buy one without an apple on it ! Still risky about the compatibility but i'll give it a try |

I tried latest GParted (0.5.0-3). It sees my Cowon A3 30GB HDD, but shows it as unallocated. I think we should find a right tool first...
Have you tried HDClone Free Edition? At least it started coping from my A3 to image file. How migration could be done:
If utility sees new drive it will work. P.S. I don't believe that HDD is locked for iPod. Last edited by i2van; 12-08-2009 at 17:56.. |

I have sent back the HDD and I found on ebay "non apple" mk1231gal (i asked the vendor)
I found several sources about the apple partitionning and no one could format it except from a device which could detect it at first (ie which works like an ipod...) But now i'll wait first to get my money back and order a good HDD later... |

Looks like MK1231GAL is not compatible with A3; MK1214GAH is compatible (but too thick). I think that the problem is in supported interface standards and bytes per sector:
MK1231GAL
Bytes/sector Host
MK1214GAH
Bytes/sector
Other presumably supported or used in A3 drives have the same characteristics as MK1214GAH. |

That's odd, if the A3 uses ATA6 or something I thought that was backward compatible with ATA3 and 4.
I wouldn't be surprised if the bytes per sector is the problem, but that can be changed with a format I believe. 512 is standard for Fat32. Of course, I can't try any of this at the moment so I really don't know. Do you have a hard drive on hand to try this i2van or was that information from somewhere else?

It's only assumptions I made from reading posts about upgrading HDDs in some mobile devices, so I can't be sure.
I though about MK1231GAL from Transcend HDD bay, but now I will look for more suitable device (it might be Samsung). Bytes per sector is physical, not logical parameter. It prevents, for example, from using MK1231GAL in Aspire One netbook. Other mentioned drives work well. |

Unfortunately I couldn't really test it because of the "apple" problem. But moreover, you can't find two similar piece of info about the ATA used by a HDD as you find many different stuff on the net, even on different toshiba pages... (PATA, ATA 3/4, ATA 7....) |
