The D2 is probably the easiest player to take apart I've ever owned.

the D2 is thankfully easier then some other players (creative Zen, ipod, what the hell are you thinking? this is why I do ont buy your products, and I would never endorse them)

I'm experiencing similar problems- my batteries cells to solder them are.... getting weaker. Can I find a battery like this LOCALLY in canada? why the fuck does it have to be so hard to serivce? easy to open, but custom batteries are a pain in the ass- the Omnia will be easier when and if the time comes for that (hopefully not, but I will be ready)

anyway, I'll post pictures later- my red D2 seems almost unredeemable though, I droped it today and I think that killed it, plus I have the touch screen issue... how much would it be for cowon to fix?

anyway, I'm going on about nothing, I'll post my pictures later- I've tooken mine apart and soldered it back in.... several times. Mine was a poorly made unit despite having a rare frame (red)

here we go, can I find the stuff locally? also, I may need new wiring.

Just a follow up about my battery replacement - as rapide_23 said the replacement Cameron Sino battery I got was a bit thicker than the original battery, so it pushed the back of my D2 open a bit. Eventually the screw holder by the headphone jack broke so nothings holding the case closed on that side (probably happened when it got dropped or something) and because of the thicker battery it pops open.
Anyone replacing their battery this way should probably keep this in mind. Maybe using one those clear plastic cases would keep the back pressed in place better with the thicker battery and avoid any screw holders breaking off...

The battery is still working great though, and it's been about 5 months, wich is longer than I expected it would work.

Thumb Up

this is really good, now i need to debate if i should buy new bat or go with something new d2 has been a lot of fun had it since 2007, so the bat isnt the best but its still enough for me for basic usage and even still worked for 8h straight at one job i had so thats a min, but to get that 30h+ back would be really sweet, might have to do same for my sis D2 a well

I have one of the other DX Nokia replacement batteries (I forget which one, but it's also around $3) in my phone right now. It seems to me that it doesn't last as long as the original, but it cost 1/10th as much and is perfectly functional. So this is about the cheapest way to get a crapped out D2 working again.
yup it looks exactly like the one the op has same sticker same everything i can take a pic and upload it, anyway it took a while for it to arrive ill be soldering 2 of them one for me and my sis D2

I have to say that that place does not have good batteries... the D2 that I sold reported that the battery didnt last long and so did my sis report that her D2 battery that I replaced is not lasting long at all...

so does anyone have any confirmed decent batteries for a decent price to get? besides the one from http://www.dealextreme.com ? which took forever to ship too... i understand it was cheap and was a risk but no battery should be that bad...

maybe it was a bad batch? as i got both same time?

to those who said it will bulge really bad, there is a trick and pretty much a way to install with minimal bulging.

Install with caution side facing you (not into the player) when doing so make sure that the area that has the bulge which looks like a charging circuit is away from the headphone jack.

Doing this will give you a really nice fit with minimal bulge.

I tried this after installing it the other way around and having nasty bulge.

I bought one of the cheap $3 Deal extreme batteries a while back (for my phone, not D2) and it worked but had much worse capacity than it claimed. It is ok as a spare to swap into the phone if the main battery runs out, so I carry it around for that purpose. For a D2 where swapping batteries is quite difficult, I'd spend the money and get a better battery.

DX now has a "Pisen" BP-4L sized battery for $7.50 that has a good chance of being better than that $3 one: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.39142 They also claim to have Nokia OEM batteries but I'm skeptical that they are genuine. If you want a Nokia OEM pack I'd advise getting it from a real Nokia outlet.

I bought a "Japod" branded battery from DX and it works great. It was around $7 and has capacity as good as a Nokia battery. That's why I think the Pisen might also be ok. (Japod doesn't seem to have a BP-4L sized pack; the one I got was a different size).

The Cameron Sino batteries on ebay are supposed to be pretty good and since they already have the right connector and fit the D2 more precisely, they make more sense than adapting a phone battery. I think the phone battery trick is worth knowing in case all the alternatives dry up.

I hate proprietary batteries.

Yes!

I would like to replace my Rio Karma, which is the best sounding DAP I've ever heard.

My Pisen battery arrived from DX. It looks pretty nice, it was well packaged on a double layer blister card with a bunch of fancy printing on the card (maybe there is a problem with people faking Pisen batteries). The battery itself looks ok. It is about 5.2mm thick at the thickest point, about 0.2mm thicker than a real BP-4L. It fits in my Nokia E63 phone and runs it fine, though I haven't done any runtime test yet (it is charging now). I have to wonder the max thickness is to fit in the D2. It was interesting to hear the Cameron Sino battery is a little too thick--does anyone have one and a way to measure it?

Assuming the Pisen battery works out ok for my phone, I'd probably use one if I want to replace my D2 battery at some point. The Pisen doesn't seem as nice as the real Nokia battery but it appears quite a bit better than the random $3 batteries DX sells (these days with fake Nokia labels). Btw if you compare the fake Nokia hologram with a real one, the fake one looks like crap. It could only fool someone who hasn't examined a real one.

Update: Charged up the Pisen battery yesterday (Saturday) and put it in my phone and let it run overnight and today and it's down to 2 bars (out of 7). That's not a good sign. I'll wait til it shuts down, then do a comparable runtime test with the OEM battery. I'll also see if I can figure out how to do a capacity measurement on my hobby charger.

Update 2: Using phone through Sunday got charge level down to 1 bar, and phone powered itself off sometime Sunday night. I recharged it Monday morning and used it a fair amount in the afternoon and evening, and it's now (Tuesday morning) still at 6 bars, a lot better than last time. I guess I've heard of lithium batteries' capacity increasing during the first few charges. Pisen seems to be a serious manufacturer (www.pisen.com.cn), giving hope of good batteries from them. It doesn't make much sense for any battery faker to make fake Pisen labelling instead of fake Nokia labelling. So I guess this is promising.
