There's your reason right there. The H.264 codec is what is causing the problem and not the resolution of the video

for some reason, Cowon has no support for this codec on any of their players...even on their diesel powered P5...probably a licensing issue
you HAVE to convert it unfortunately...but you can convert it with GOM, super, or even the not free xilisoft with xvid at a high bitrate and you wont be able to tell the difference

Unfortunately it is unlikely we will ever have the opportunity to enjoy H.264 mkv HD files on any cowon so better make do with what we have. which is still way better than most of the market.

Are you sure about that?
I thought the o2 can play back h.264. They even list it among the codecs in the tech specs for the o2. What I really want to know is if the o2 can playback Handbrake files encoded with the Apple Universal settings. Does anyone know? Quote:

can you tell me details of H264 (standard)?
because o2 can play this specification easily: Format.....: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Bitrate....: 1107 Kbit/s Framerate..: 25 fps Resolution.: 704x432 Ratio......: 2.35:1 but can`t play : Format: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Bitrate: 1610 kbs Resolution: 1280 x 528 Frame Rate: 23,976 fps Display Aspect Ratio: 2.424 so, problem is only bitrate (1610 / 1107 ) ?? |

I am no expert. But there are two types of the H.264 codec I know of. One version is the SP (standard profile) used for encoding videos of a standard resolution and bitrate. Then there is the HP (high profile) used often in the mkv container to encode videos of a high resolution such as the one profiled above. The O2 can handle the standard version well but not the high profile for H.264 though it can handle high profile for xvid/divx etc

I would think that the problem often is not the bitrate, but the enhanced settings, described in the profiles.
Settings that often seem to make problems on portable devices are Pyramidal B-frames and 8x8 discrete cosinus transformation. I would guess anything up to BP @ Level 3 should be no problem on the O2. BP @ L 3.1 could be a problem. Edit: The Apple Universal settings do not feature Pyramidal B-frames or 8x8DCT, so you shouldn't run into problems seedyo2. At least not if you don't exceed Level 3 - basically, only use resolutions up to 720×576@25FPS. Anything above these settings would have to be experimented with. But if both files hdha03l is asking about have been encoded with the same settings, e.g. Apple Universal settings I think it is safe to say it is a resolution problem.
