Default Oh no! My D2 LCD Screen cracked at the side!

Damn..I am not sure how this happened...its been over 10 months since I had my D2 and this just happened! I left it at the com to charge overnite at home then took it to work but did not take it out on the way for listening until I was at work and I took it out of my pocket and to my shock, there were a few lines of crack at the right side of my D2 (1 line of crack even extended to the top center half!) I dunno how it happened...didnt bang against any thing while it was in jeans or what.. and I take a taxi to work as well...now it seems due to the crack, some of the hotspots on the right side of the screen cant respond like the arrows/dictionary icon/close button etc. Looks like I have to send it to servicing.. but I live in the other side of the world (asia) and I had it shipped through amazon usa..has anyone tried sending back thru amazon and how long does it take to receive it back? I am still under my first year warranty.

I think you better check with cowon if you will accept your unit if you shipped it to them directly. Display is not covered under warranty anf it make no sense that you send it back to USA and they have it shipped to Korea for repair. It gotta cost a lot more.

Default Don't bother

Unless you have a 16gb or one of the more expensive ones. I cracked my screen and my research sowed the repair cost was @$90. I got a new 4gb for $119. I also got a cowon leather case!

display is not under covered under warranty? I didnt know that! so I guess I have to pay for repair costs.

Parisis, you sent it back to cowon and they charged you $90USD? that is quite ridiculous

sucks dude.

Is there a way to order a screen so it can be replaced by ourselfs?
I jst got mine last week, but if this will happen to me I would like to repair it by myself. I studied electronics so it really would be no problem for me.

I was prepared to replace mine, too as it's not all that complicated, but it seems there are no vendors a reliable reputation or reasonable prices.. I looked very hard, and couldn't find anyone in all of the U.S., or even North America.

I too cracked mine, the touch screen layer only.

Bought a broken white one with a good screen for $85 shipped, and swapped the casing and the screen (white is way nicer in person!) and saved $5 (+ shipping to Cowon repair centre) and got a crystal case, another USB lead, and another pair of buds.

Mine was a DAB so it wasn't worth writing off, and they are much more expensive in the UK!

Unfortunately a disadvantage of Cowon players is the popularity. iPods are far more popular, so there are spare parts and guides.

Without a guide it was pretty tricky, but I didn't break anything, apart from an already broken reset mechanism that fell apart when I disassembled the original d2 with cracked screen, but the switch still works, so I can reset with that, like i always did anyway.

If I were you I would send it in for repair, or just replace. I didn't as shipping was expensive to Asia (and the last thing I wanted was it to get lost/damadged further), and the German repair centre wouldn't do mine for some reason, and it would have cost far more than a Cowon repair (and way more than my repair) to replace (DAB, and live in UK.)

You could try to buy a broken one, or second hand non-DAB/DMB 2gb (cheapest) and replace, but its alot of hassle, and If you are not very good with electronics (my dad is a IBM (server) computer engineer, which helped alot), even more hassle.

Heres the picture of my D2 screen cracked:

Looks pretty bad with the right side not really responding

Damn looks like I got to get it replaced...I would go down and check with the cowon retailer here in my country to see if they can get it repaired..I did spoke to them before and they said they would offer repair services for imported sets just that I have to pay a repair admin fee of $15 + the additional repairs for the screen replacement...I hope it doesnt cost as much.. I am using a 8GB D2 and don't think have any plans of changing to a newer one..though S9 is just around the corner but sure its going to be quite expensive when its just released. Its ok if I send in a D2 with the metal skin on?

Should be alright to. It doesn't affect disassembly.

woah it looks like you even got a plastic case on it, pretty unlucky to manage to crack it.

The plastic case makes little difference to the screen, even if you drop it, and it doesn't protect the screen being pushed too hard in your pocket.

yes the plastic case does not really make any difference... but I really didnt drop the d2 and have took good care of it..and somehow it got cracked..no idea..perhaps it could heat up too much while charging through usb? either that or the force of impact on the screen when its in the pocket of my jeans..hey baines what kind of shops should I look at if I want to get my screen repaired externally

What I documented at the time when i opened my broken d2 to check the screen was removable easily (no solder) before buying the "donor" d2 to fix mine... Hope it is of any help.

Quote:
Well, i opened my D2 today to check that the screen did have a connector, as i saw in some pictures that they had removed a spare flash chip, and i thought it may be a good idea to check before buying the D2 with the missing power slider.

The screen is on a connector, so so long as the one with the missing power slider has a connector, im ok.

It was ok to open. Screws a bit tight. Clasps hard to undo, but eventually we managed to reveal the battery, and broke the double sided sticky tape on the back, and the foam one from the high point on the board. Then unscrewed the main board, then realised i didnt have to, and released the clips on the front bezel. So now i had the board in my hands, seperated unescecerily from the chasis.

I undid the clips holding the screen casing to the main board, and then being careful with the ripon cables, undid the skinny one, you push the dark brown slider on each side of the connector foward. The fat ribbon cable i thought was the same, and went to push out. The plastic was soft, and the corner (tiny bit) of the tab-lift came off, then i realised this one was lift. So yeah, still ok, just lost a bit about 0.10mm x 0.10mm from the corner of the fat ribbon cable release.

Next while packing up i found a little plastic piece which i thought came from the battery connector, underneath, so my dad tried to put it back in, it flicked off the sd card cover and dissapeared. Then i found a little metal thing with legs. It came from the reset button i think. It was held on by some tiny plastic legs around the reset metal circle. Then i realised the plastic piece must have come from here too so the stylus pushes the plastic into the reset metal circle. Then i noticed the little legs around the circle were broken down. I then realised someone when resetting must have pushed up, prying the metal up breaking the plastic legs holding it on, and letting the little plastic piece found first move around in there with the metal shelter/cover... So we cant get the metal shelter like thing back on, and lost the little piece of plastic, it seems to have been sprung up off the end of the screw driver by the thin plastic sd reader cover only fastened at the end. The reset hole should still work, but the object used will need to be pushed down to hit the metal circle. Or like i always did, hold the power slider to off for 10 seconds, i always found the reset hole a bit tempromental. So it should still work, but i didnt want to risk breaking the screen tabs to put the screen back in and test. I could use the plastic piece and metal shelter/cover from the spares d2, however i cant fix it to the borad as the little plastic bits around the hole have been broken by someone pushing up during a reset. Oh well, just have to push down instead now, or just use the switch like i do.

Last of all be careful with the microphone. There s a little rubber thingy around it, with notches out one side which helps it fit in a clip on the back cover, the clip and the rubber thing are semi-circles. Be careful, this rubber thingy falls off easily.

Thats about it really. Cant wait to get the other d2 and replace my screen and get my DAB d2 going again, and test the reset hole out of interest. Taped the mainborad screws (2) to the (huge) battery, and then the case screws onto the rear panel. Just have the bits in my altoids tin, and the chasis and screen on top of the tin.

If you had the right size touch screen panel (layer) you could peel it off and stick a new one on if the ribbon cable was the right width and had the gold bits in the right places, but that would be hard to do, and find, so this is much better. £45 and i get some spares and a case. Once my broken screen is in the white 4gb non-dab d2 it will serve as a backup player, and i can put 2.xx or 3.xx on it and try a few flash skins, as my DAB d2 on 1.55 or 4.55 only supports some flash skins, and on 1.55 only, and also on 1.55, themes, and only ones with a DAB icon.

Anyway, i am just about to buy the other d2, and it will be shipped to Filipelli on Friday, who will then ship it on to me (CONUS sale )

Anyway, thought i would upate and warn

Will take pics as i disassemble the d2 when it arrives and/or reassemble mine with the working screen.

Shame about the reset hole, but like i said, hoepfully it will still work, and if not, you can still just use the power switch.

Matt

pentexplorer,

I had a similar shock to my first D2 after 11 months of ownership. Just suddenly a crack appeared on the screen. Luckily for me I had bought a 3rd-party warranty that kicked in right after Cowon's expired, so I sent it in to them. They offered either replacement with an "equivalent device" (a Zune--ha!) or a voucher for the original value of the D2. I took the latter and used the money to buy a new D2, upgrading from 4GB to the 16GB edition for just slightly more.

Moral of the story: invest in a 3rd-party warranty service. Considering all the places you take and put your D2, something is bound to go wrong at some point. So cover your a$$. The 3rd-party warranty company I dealt with did't raise a fuss about the precise reason why my device was broken, unlike Cowon who denied any claim to the damage being under warranty.

I know this advice doesn't help your current situation, but next time...
