Default SDHC Card and hardware limitation

My laptop, as well as many other computers these days has its own slot to insert an SD card into. So this would mean I don't have to leave it in the D2 and plug it in via USB. Now, I've used my slot before and works perfectly on regular SD cards. Today I got myself my SDHC card, and when I plug it into the slot, my computer (nor any others I've tried) recognize it. When I leave it in the D2 and plug in via USB it does get recognized. Due to the following I assumed SDHC cards need their own slot, and cannot be read by regular SD card slots. Is my assumption correct? Or is there any other way? Such as formatting the card or anything like that.

That assumption is partially correct. Originally the D2 only supports SD cards, they added SDHC through a firmware upgrade. So I'd say (don't stick me to it) that a laptop SD slot also needs a firmware upgrade to to support SDHC.

My laptop has a SD slot to, and my SDHC won't get recognized either. You need a SDHC certified slot, or buy an external cardreader for 10 bucks.

Yeah but those card readers are USB right? The problem with my laptop is that it is rather old, and has the standard version 1.1 speed...

USB 1.1 (12Mbit/s max) will do fine with SDHC cards, as they can't go much faster than that anyway.

If the cardreader says USB 2.0, it should still work with USB 1.1 as it is backwards compatible. Your laptop would just not tx/rx in USB 2.0 speed.

When I replied before I only read your last post, not your first post.

You need to format your SDHC card and give it a name first. For this you would need a cardreader for your SDHC. Then insert it in your D2 and plug the D2 to your laptop. Then your laptop will see the D2 and the SDHC as separate drives.

From my own experiences with a Dell Inspiron, you might want to do some web research. I was able to get my SD card slot to support SDHC just by finding the right MS patch to install.

Ok thanks a lot, I'll try that. Thanks to everyone else as well.

I had exactly the same problem, all I did was insert the SDHC card into the Laptop and format it with the Panasonic SD Formatter, it was then recognised.

Edit:See this http://www.iaudiophile.net/forums/sh...ad.php?t=20157

I updated the card reader's driver on my VAIO laptop and now it reads SDHC cards. You should try to find new drivers for your card reader too.
