Screens work on a 3:4 ratio, the diagonal is given so it's easy to compute either length.
That ratio was chosen so the diagonal would easily be computed since it would make a 3,4,5 triangle, so you can easily find the horizontal and vertical measures by taking:
(diagonal measure)/5
and then,
(result)*3 for vertical
and,
(result)*4 for horizontal

so:
1.8/5 = .36
.36*4 = 1.44 inches (horizontal)
.36*3 = 1.08 inches (vertical)

Now that you know the basic geometry behind it, never ask that question again.

Well, you clearly have to know that as well as the diagonal, then.

Huh? The screen is 4:3 not 16:9.

Right, but many screens are now 16:9, so you need to know which a given screen is. Fido claimed all you needed was the diagonal.

Oops, got that backwards.
But widescreen screens are wider, you can tell if a screen is widescreen just by looking at it, all you need to know is the diagonal and whether a screen is widescreen or not is self explanitory.
