Screens work on a 3:4 ratio, the diagonal is given so it's easy to compute either length.
That ratio was chosen so the diagonal would easily be computed since it would make a 3,4,5 triangle, so you can easily find the horizontal and vertical measures by taking: (diagonal measure)/5 and then, (result)*3 for vertical and, (result)*4 for horizontal so: 1.8/5 = .36 .36*4 = 1.44 inches (horizontal) .36*3 = 1.08 inches (vertical) Now that you know the basic geometry behind it, never ask that question again. |

Well, you clearly have to know that as well as the diagonal, then.

Huh? The screen is 4:3 not 16:9.

Right, but many screens are now 16:9, so you need to know which a given screen is. Fido claimed all you needed was the diagonal.

Oops, got that backwards.
But widescreen screens are wider, you can tell if a screen is widescreen just by looking at it, all you need to know is the diagonal and whether a screen is widescreen or not is self explanitory. |
