I'm just about to purchase an iaudio X5, I'd just like to clear up a few things first. I'm going to be using this for a lot of recording. I know there has been a good bit of talk about the recording features on this board, and I have searched through most of them, but here's a few questions I haven't been able to answer:

1) is it possible for me to "lock" the buttons (i.e. if the power button gets bumped it won't turn off; if the "record stop" button gets bumped it won't stop recording)?

2) will the iaudio X5 show me recording levels while recording?

3) can I adjust the recording levels while recording?

Thanks for your help,
Milo

1) Yes - There is a nice HOLD Button. If you have a Remote it also has a HOLD button. They are independent of each other - a nice touch - locked in your pocket, unlocked on the R/c.

2) I believe so. but not very accuratly

3) - I don't think so - unless you call moving closer/futher away "adjust"

Thanks for your help, but the third answer raises one last question: Can adjust the recording level at all, even before I begin recording? I don't see anything about it in the manual, so that's probably not a good sign.

I suppose an external powered microphone might have that facility

Are you talking about using a microphone, or via line-in? Because I'm pretty sure there's a "Line Volume" setting in the Recording settings - does that not change the line-in volume?

I thought you could control the line-in level on the M3? I would have assumed the same feature in X5. Not sure whether it could be changed during recording, though.

Edit: Summerblink already answered, so I guess the X5 does have this.

Just to remind you guys, the X5 only has a LINE IN for recording. Sadly, there is no mic in. You must supply phantom power with the mic you use. To me, this sadly frusterates the process of stealthy or casual recording with the X5...

Well it does have a built-in mic if you want really casual recording.

Thanks to all for your help. I think I'm going to push ahead and purchase the X5 regardless. I'll get good use out of it either way and it seems I can buy accessories to make it do what I want if I should choose to.

I am well aware that it only has a line-in input and not a powered mic input. I know the difference and it shouldn't cause a problem for me, but thanks for the heads up anyways.

It has a built in mic, although you can adjust the volume of it, you can only change it from low to high. I found the mic to work fine, but you need to keep it on a still place, a slight amount of moving it across a table creates a loud scratching sound, but if you don't touch it it's fine.

Fido,

What is the quality like? I would imagine it's not that good.

I'm considering using this selfpowered microphone from Sound Professionals:

I'm still turned off by having to plug it into the subpak (I wish it was a direct connection to the unit), but if I want the X5 and want to do a decent quality recording I think this may be the best way.

The highest bitrate you can record for voice recording is 128kbps, also the volume is a little low, even on high.

It looks like you want really good quality, but if you use an external mic you'll have no problems with 320kbps line in recordings.
