Default [GUIDE] Alternate method to easily convert videos for the D2 / any other media player

UPDATE

*Added Widescreen 16:9 Conversion Options
*Added 2048 kbps video quality (extremely high)

DOWNLOAD HERE

================================================== ======================

Hi,

I would just like to share a method I have been using to get videos on to my PSP, sisters IPOD and now my D2.

It is by far the fastest and easiest method I have known, their is no installation required, you can customize the settings to your hearts content and convert videos for any media player.

I am not posting this with the intention of bashing all other apps out there, in fact there are some fantastic ones such as elviselvis's ILove. I'm just posting this so you have a more broader range to choose from / alternate method.

I however did find that ILove would cause video/audio sync problems with flv files amongst others. This program will hopefully not, I have personally tested it.

Anyway enough talk, lets get into details.

================================================== ========

Guide is Windows only, this will work with WINE after modifying some settings. However Linux users, stay tuned. I will post a guide native to Linux soon enough.

NOTE: I have attached the entire tutorial as a pdf file as well

DOWNLOAD 3GP CONVERTER HERE

Then you will want to launch 3GP_Converter.exe, which will greet you with a window that resembles this:

The usage is pretty self explanatory, choose quality, browse for output directory and drag&drop files or folders ino the blank space. Supports all popular formats, including flv.

However lets get into some details so you can tweak this app to your liking and make it work for any media player.

In the folder where the .exe file is their should be a file called "transcoding.ini". This file controls the settings for the conversion process, lets go ahead and examine it.

Now you have all the knowledge, you can modify these settings to suit your needs.

You may have noticed that their is also an .exe file called setup. What this does is allows you to select your preferred language and choose from various default setting presets
(backup the current transcoding.ini first)

Other than that if you right click the main program window you will be greeted with various other settings

Adjust these to your needs, especially the priority of child processes. I have mine set to real-time as I have a dual core processor. This program will utilize dual core and the encoding speeds are very fast, even at idle instead of realtime.

Known Issues

- NONE.

================================================== ========

Well hope this was of help, thanks for reading.

I take no credit for the Linux tutorial

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSmc-C0q0WU"]Click here[/ame] for a video tutorial on how to easily convert videos for the D2 / any other player. Uses a gui app so for those who fear the command line, this is perfect

I have fixed the problem about the incorrect playback time.
This is due to the 3GP Converter doesn't have update for a long time, the core "ffmpeg" is a very old version.

Now, I have updated it, and some of the parameter is changed on the new version.
Just open the Transcoding.ini, and you will know which parameter have changed.

Well I used 3gp to convert a vid I have. D2 is in mtp mode so I'm not sure if this is a reason why but when I try to drag n drop the file to the Video folder on my D2 in Explorer I get this message:

.avi file type is not supported on this device. If it is a media file, you may be able to use windows media player to convert file to a playable type prior to transfer.

Any tips?

Did you try to play the file? I think I always got that message when I was in MTP mode. The AVI's seemed to play ok. Or I had to switch to MSC mode, I don't remember, it was a long time ago. But I think that MTP is the reason for that message. The video is probably fine.

I have tried a couple of other coverters but this one has given me the best results, especially with the flv files. Just wanted to say thanks. Now I'm really enjoying the D2.

Oh yes. this is the best one! ty.

EDIT: nvm. this sucks. it sqeezes the video ratio so the aspect ratio is all wrong. to me aspect ratio is the most important thing over everything else. it should have a crop function or resize with the right ratio.

Could you please tell me which is giving you problems, the 3gp converter or the linux avidemux method. You can also use avidemux for windows by the way

The aspect ratio has been working fine for me so far. Il try and see if theres something wrong with the code in the uploaded version.

I downloaded the 3gp converter in post 5 of this thread. and i tried to convert a widescreen video. but in aspect ratio was squeezed from the side. so.. it would be nice if it had an option of Letterboxing OR cropping.

havn't tried avidemux. oh okay so it works on windows. i'll try it now.
