Default trouble with usb connection

Hi all: I bought the U5 for one main reason: it is one of the few MP3 players that has a balance or "pan" function (if anyone knows of any others, please let me know), important because I am partly deaf in one ear. But, it's been nothing but trouble. First, it wouldn't charge properly (wouldn't show the "charging" icon). I updated the firmware (now 1.14), and that worked. But, after a few days of working OK, now it cannot be connected to a computer through a USB port - two computers simply say "USB device has malfunctioned." Updating the drivers doesn't help, doing a hard reset doesn't help, and the instructions, even the full manual, are of no help. Since it doesn't come with independent charger (and seems impossible to obtain), it cannot be charged, nor can the music files be changed. It does play OK for now, but that is little consolation! There have been other quirks I won't get into here, but does anyone have any ideas about what is wrong & how to reconnect? Thanks.

I recently had the same problem after I upgraded to firmware 1.16. After resetting/reconnected about 20 times it finally connected. I went back to firmware 1.10 and all has been fine.

I wonder if there is some issue with the firmware after 1.10. I went from 1.10-->1.16. If you can get it connected again, try going back to 1.10.
