Default D2 doesnt like 224kbps mp3 files and some other issues

This is my first message. I was thrilled to have this gem last week. Then some problems arised.
1- First I will tell you it is a shame for Archos to ship this unit with older version of jetaudio. Jetshell kept telling no usb unit, until I downloaded the latest Jetaudio.
2- Unit has come with firmware 2.50, I upgraded to 2.54 and voila! mp3's play well but flac files which were playing an hour ago wont play anymore. Now I downgraded to 2.51 and flacs play again.
3- I realized today that mp3's encoded in 224kbps lock D2 and you have to do a reset, or sometimes it resets itself and no SDHC until you restart it.
4- Something of weirdest happened today. Internal memory didnt see the flac files which it played well yesterday. All the folders were empty. When connected to PC they were all there. I cut them all from internal memory and pasted them to SDHC card and they started to be available again.
I am scared now to go to 2.54 again, because I bought this unit to be able to listen to flac.

Any ideas about all these. Any comment will be appreciated.
Thanx

I don't use FLAC (IMO too big files with no-to-marginal sound improvment when compared to high quality lame mp3). However, as far as I know, there are issues with different FLAC codec versions in combination with some FW... Have a closer look to this great forum, if I found that (without real interest in FLAC playing) I'm sure you will find it too.

All of the threads I have seen have ended up being tag issues. The D2 is picky with tags. Please use something like Tag&Rename or MP3Tag to remove all the tags and try to play them again. My personal tests all passed with 2.54 firmware and Vorbis comments only as tags, per the specification for FLAC files.

I just ripped a 4 CD's to FLAC files, Compression Level 5 using MM.

Loaded them on a 8GB SDHC card along with a cover.jpg in each album folder.

They all play just fine to include displaying the album art. The FW on my D2 is 2.54.

The FLAC version is 1.2.1.

I then convert the FLAC files to MP3 (Extreme: VRB ~256 kbps - Near CD Quality +) using MM and check the ID3 tags and they play just fine too.

Hope this helps you.

Dalmane98, just checking...the D2 isn't reading your embedded flac album art is it??
Or are you using a cover jpg?
I haven't tried the most recent firmware but I don't think it reads my embedded flac album art. Just checking to make sure.

No

A Cover.jpg in each album folder.

I do embed the album art in the FLAC file though using Mp3tag. That way when I convert the FLAC file to a MP3 file the tag is automatically embedded in the MP3 file.

I very seldom have a problem with ID3 tags, because I take my time and double check everything. I make sure the tags are right in the FLAC files from the start. Less problems that way.

Ok Dalmane98, that is what I thought, I also use Mp3tag to embed album art in flac tag.
And I'm very much a perfectionist also with my tags making sure everything is perfect. I now actually enjoy tagging my music ...lol.

Can it be that upgrading from 2.50 to 2.54 caused that? Now 2.51 works fine.
It also appears that there is nothing wrong with 224kbps mp3's. I think D2 doesnt like underscores in filenames.

This is definately NOT true, because ALL my files are having underscores instead of spaces in the filenames. And these files play fine with FW 2.51, 2.54 and 3.54.
