Thumb Up List of Video Converters for D2

Rather than have a whole bunch of stickies, I figured it made more sense to have a sticky meta-thread.

Please keep in mind that while converting DVD's in and of itself is not illegal, depending on your locality any conversion which also involves circumventing copy protection is _definitely_ a legal grey area at this time. Specifically almost any DVD that you'd rip in the US would have this copy protection. iAudiophile assumes no responsibility for what you choose to do with any software referenced on this board.

Feel free to add to this list with links and/or notes.

The best way of transcoding for the D2 on linux I've found is to use Avidemux (http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/). The site also claims to support the same feature set on Windows and Mac OSX, so this may in fact be one of the better ways to convert videos for the D2 on any platform.

On the left-hand side, set Video to MPEG-4 ASP (lavc) for newer versions, and FFMPEG MPEG-4 for older versions. Set Audio to MP3 (LAME), and set Format to AVI. One big upside of this process is that you can use this GUI to convert VOBs, resize/crop the video, and so on. Also, there is a job queueing system so that's pretty handy. All in all, it's like Virtualdub for Linux (GTK).

Every video I've converted with this application using the above codecs has worked flawlessly on the D2. I haven't found a more palatable way of converting than using this program.

How do you go about changing the resolution to fit D2, etc? What other settings must be specified?

Is there a script I could use in Nautilus to automatically convert the video file using Avidemux?

The "auto" menu in Avidemux has "ipod". Do I have to download something to add "d2" auto-settings?

On the left you have to click on Filters. From there go Transform>Resize(double-click). I'm using the OSX version so it might be slightly different.

I'm using Avidemux as well (windows vista) and it works like a charm.

however, I've yet to work the dual audio MKV files from it as well as the subtitles. I'm sure it can handle it, but I'm not sure how.

For multi audio tracks, after you load the video, go to audio > main track and select one from it.

For soft sub you have to demux the source video to extract the sub file. I use mkvextract. Then you go to video > filter > subtitles > apply the right filter for your sub file (subtitler for .srt/.sub for example) and add the sub file.

Hrm I assume you selected your main track with Audio > Main track?

In that window, there's a drop-down menu called Track from video. The track can be something like "Audio track 0 (Ogg Vorbis/2 channels/160 kbit per s/0ms shift)"

Try using that shift value for the audio shift check box in main window.

Check your PM if that still doesn't sync

I completely flummoxed by the Job set up in avidemux. I'm on 2.3.4 QT. When you want to add to a job it gives you the blank job menu again instead of the expected job that you're addding to. How do you add multiple videos to a job before running it? Moreover, is there any way to not have to rename each video output? That can't be right... : ( Following the Wiki on jobs still has me going around in circles.

I can't even figure out how to initiate the conversion without creating a job.

Thanks

Hey folks, could you take the conversations elsewhere? This thread was intended to be an index of links, not a discussion thread.

Thanks.

Creative ZEN X-Fi Video Converter 1.00.03

Link OR Link

It uses the available codecs in your computer to convert video files, so download k-lite OR cccp codec pack.

and then the video converter will convert it into 320x240 wmv files for your d2,

you can choose crop OR letterboxing

No video distortion, No audio out of sync.

Thumb Up A nice Linux program for video conversion

... is Hyper Video Converter (Version 0.4.1 as of December 2008):

http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show...f313559f67edb6

It uses ffmpeg, ffmpeg2theora and/or mencoder for conversion. You can adjust pretty much any parameter of the aforementioned tools and there is also a couple of presets (you need to copy the hidden file .hyperconf into your /home) from which I've used ffmpeg preset named xvid - mp3 (any quality) and adapted the video size to 320x240.

This little program did the trick for me, as an iRiverter *.deb wasn't available for Debian Lenny (I don't like to install a ton of *.dev packages for compiling one program). Both my thumbs up for HVC ...

Avidemux should definitely be on this list. I have started a discussion thread at http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=25198, and I have started to log my experiences with this product. I have included a link to a Wiki that should answer almost any question that you have about this great video tool for the D2 (and other video players). BTW, not only is it a great transcoder, but it allows all kinds of editing, too.

I have used Erightsoft's Super video/audio coverter with great success for many codecs. Quote from their site:

"SUPER © Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer.
A GUI to FFmpeg, MEncoder, MPlayer, x264, mppenc,
ffmpeg2theora & the theora/vorbis RealProducer plugIn. "

It is a Windows application and can be found at:

Download link:

All the way at the bottom has the link to the EXE
