No D2 getting worse and worse, can't connect to PC

Hey all,

I've been using my D2 happily for about 2 months now with an 8GB SDHC card, always worked like a charm... until today. I was at the office, using my Mac laptop, wanted to transfer two mp3 files from the laptop to the D2 (done many times before from PC / Mac / Linux, all worked just fine)

I dragged the 2 files over to the D2 (the SDHC card wasn't showing up as a drive this time, but that's happened before, so thought nothing of it).

Disconnected, turned player on. The usual long wait to re-index all songs...
Player is back on, and low and behold all songs are now named Unknown - Unknown - Unknown. What's even worse, is that I can't browse by folders / files anymore either, all directory entries are empty, even though the lists still appear. When I try to play a file, the player turns off.

I had about 1.1 GB of free space on the internal 4GB.

I was using firmware 2.46 quite happily, but figured I might as well take this opportunity to flash 2.50. This went a lot less hassle free than previous firmware updates for some reason. Many blank white screens appeared, but finally got the device turning back on.

Tried reconnecting the device (still to the Mac at work), worked fine, but realized I forgot to change to MSC, so did that. All the files are still on the player just fine, but still can't index anything, attempting to play any file will crash the player, attempting to browse through artists / songs / folders results in the same, a bunch of empty entries.

Came home, tried connecting the player to my PC (again, has always worked fine).

First time: nothing happens at all when I connect the USB cable. player stays black.
player was on hold, so I flicked the hold off.

Second time: USB charging comes on the screen, but no drive available to the OS. (Yes it's set to MSC mode now)

Third, fourth, fifth times: Linux / WinXP no device appears to the OS. I've tried the reset button a few times, but doesn't seem tto help anything...

I was going to re-flash the firmware, but I can't because I'm stuck with a player that crashes when you try to play anything, and can't connect to a PC properly...

Any thoughts?

wow, sorry for that man. what's the kbps on those MP3 tracks? (not sure if that's causing the problem but every little knowledge giving helps). try connecting to a diff. computer rather then your PC and MAC (your MAC and PC are used to having that plugged in and what not). also try connecting without the SD Card inserted.

My feeling on your initial symptoms is that files that are transferred under MTP mode aren't getting recognized properly after the D2 is switched to MSC mode. At least, that seems to have happened to others since v2.50 came out, and re-copying the files made them recognized again on the next re-index.

You might consider carefully reflashing the firmware to v2.46, then see if you can connect and copy files over via MSC mode. Avoid installing the SDHC card until after you've confirmed the D2 firmware is fully updated and looking like an external drive on the computer you connect to.

My $0.02.

thanks guys, however, I can't reflash any firmware until I can get it to be recognized by any OS.

I have tried with and without the SD card as well. The MP3's in questions were VBR around 140 kbps average using LAME VBR5 I think, also the player was still on 2.46 in MSC mode when I added those two.

Is there anything like a hard reset I can try? Some magical button combination I don't know about?

You have any drives that share the same drive letter as the D2? My D2 wasn't recognized because I had some network drives that used a drive letter the D2 wanted. Once I disconnected the network drives, the D2 recognized fine. Once it was recognized, I assigned the D2 a drive letter I would never use, so I wouldn't run into the same problem again.

not really, on windows anyway, on linux that isn't an issue at all as any device just mounts wherever it's connected...

I get the same 'unknown' problem as you when transferring with msc, but restarting the player always fixes it.

Try turning to those users who happen to have recovery mode drivers for the D2. You can find them right here: http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=14750

so these recovery drivers, will they void the warranty? if so, I might prefer just RMAing my D2...

thanks again everyone.

Default Had to send my D2 back.

I've had similar problems with my D2. Had it for about a month. Everything was working fine until I decided to start filling up the 8GB SDHC card that I bought with it. I loaded several CD's worth of music onto the card, which took quite a bit longer to do than it does loading music on the internal memory. When I unplugged the unit from the computer and powered it back on, half the music I just loaded onto it was missing. Plugged it back into the computer, but at this point the computer didn't recognize the SDHC card as an external drive. Unplugged the unit, plugged it back in... this time the folders on the internal memory were gone too. Now it won't do anything. Tried to reflash the firmware, but it didn't work. Had to send it back for a replacement today. Hopefully the next one will be touble-free. Can't say that I'm holding my breath, though. Anyone else having similar problems? Does Cowon know what's going on?

Thumb Up

I THINK I FIXED IT!

So D2 wasn't playing any music or indexing any tags, and was not connecting to Windows XP or Linux,

but, I finally got around to bringing the D2 back into the office to give the Mac OSX machine a last chance, and the drive shows up as normal, but I get a warning when I connect it (using 2.50 f/w, set to MSC) saying "Can't read from device (or something) Ignore, Initialize, Eject".

I hit ignore, because at least the device is showing up.

I flashed the 2.46 firmware (from 2.50) and now everything seems completely normal (I'm still at work, only tested on Mac OSX so far mind you).

It would appear the upgrade to 2.50, or 2.50 itself was to blame. ???

Anyway, whohooo!

Congratulations! I think you should use 2.5. Try it, in case the d2 broke again, take it to your job AGAIN =P

2.50 does not work with OSX, not properly.

Congratulations on fixing it, but only upgrade to 2.50 if you need flac 1.14 support...
