I was given an ipod nano the other day (someone I know received it as a gift, and didn't want it) and I figure it would make a nice backup to my X5, the only problem is I don't want to install any software (even itunes) on my computer to transfer media onto it - is there any way to modify it to allow drag and drop like the X5 (and most media players) does?

I wouldn't think so, but I could be wrong.

Hmm, you'd think with such a large user base they'd have some extensive mods available.

Rockbox doesn't work on the new nanos for some reason, I wish it did.

. I knew that (there's no head-smack emoticon here, hmm); I guess I just wasn't thinking (I've got it on a 1st-gen Nano).

This is really shocking - hasn't apple sold over ten trillion ipods? You'd think messing with it would be no big deal.

Well you could go with the aforementioned Anapod, but it's not freeware. It's either $20 or $25 depending on which version you need. (Check the chart on their site, you need different versions for different iPods.)
Other than Anapod, and no outside reviews to say how good or bad that program really works, you're stuck with iTunes. You must use iTunes to load music onto an iPod. Your iPod will also be automatically 'locked' to only one computer. Connect it to a 'non-authorized' computer and your music will be deleted from the iPod. Also, should you ever decide to buy any music tracks through the iTunes store, they will only play on an iPod. No other player can play that format because Apple refuses to allow other manufacturers to use their proprietary file format. That's one reason why some people buy one iPod after another, because they had no idea that songs purchased from the iTunes store would only play on another iPod. Well at least you got the iPod for free. If you actually bought the thing and then found out all that stuff you would be even less happy. |

that reminds me... on the flagship list of d2's formats... aperently AAC got tooken off on a firmwire update... yeesh.
thats right. I hear the second gen nanos are a bitch to mod... my buddys got his first gen nano modded (after I GAVE him shit for buying one, can you belive him? and hes trying to convenice me and he KNOWS I wouldn't buy a player if theres no fm. oh well, cell phone guy anyway- thats the new thing these days.) you can even play pokemon (sliver) and kriby (first one) on it... huh. controls are nuts though. no sound either. however, the mods give his ipod drag and drop abtilites... but he has to use the rockbox interface since, get this- without the tunes software the organal ipod interface (the one you all know and hate) couldn't even detect it! |

Yamipod. Stick the executable on the Nano and runs directly off the iPod. It's free.
I can think of only three reasons why you wouldn't want to install iTunes on your main syncing computer though, it's a far superior method of managing music compared to anything Cowon have natively (I use j.River Media Center on my Cowons)... one being that your collection is almost entirely stolen in bits so you have a mish-mash of mistagged tracks, another is that your computer is too cruddy (although it needn't be completely up to date) and the third is... well, a variation on the fanboi theme. Let's face it, most of you don't even have anything other than a superficial knowledge of the thing you've decided to hate on. |

iTunes is pretty sluggish, and adding a Mac interface on windows doesn't work.
The installer is also about 40 mb, people don't want to download that Also, it only holds MP3, AAC, and WAV. Lots of people use ogg and flac. Some people do like the drag and drop interface. Not everyone has the same opinions as you If you like syncing, try MediaMonkey with cowon players. |

Sure. In the same vein you could say "Lot's of people do like the hexagonal wheels".
Since the guy who's asking (and many of those doing the answering, apparently) clearly doesn't know much about the iPod, what I'm basically saying is why not actually try and use it as an iPod. Failing that, there's Yamipod, Sharepod, Anapod, etc etc ad nauseum. Last edited by goatherder; 07-07-2007 at 11:11.. |
