Default *.mkv file to AVI or another codec.

Hey.
I'm thinking about buying the A2, but I have a question.
I saw that the A2 doesn't support Matroska (MKV) files.
1. There is a chance that in the future, there will be a firmware upgrade which include the Matroska codec?
2. can I convert MKV file to AVI or another file, without to lose quality at all and the file will still be in the same size as the MKV?

Thanks for the helpers

1. i doubt they'll upgrade mkv files on the A2, because i believe the A3 will have that support. you may wanna check out the A3 thread when it's going to be released. i dont think they'll do it for A2 because of the A3. no sense of having the A3 at all if they're going to add stuffs thats in the A3 to the A2. but i hope they do. can only hope. along with gapless play. ha.

2. i believe any conversion will lose quality. as for size, depends on the specs/settings.

so if you can wait, go for the A3. if not, you'll just have to convert your mkv files to compatible ones.

MKV is merely a container, as is AVI. You can easily change between the two formats without altering the video or audio streams.

Just use VirtualDubMod, open the MKV, go into the Video menu and change it to Direct Stream Copy. Then File -> Save As. The resulting file will be 2-6mb larger. This is because MKV is more a better container format than AVI, and has less overhead.

Keep in mind though, the video stream in the MKV must be a compatible codec.
