I've had my X5 since Summer '05, and since late last year, the well known battery weakness was beginning to show. I'd get maybe 1.5 hours with the original FW, maybe 4-5 hours with Rockbox.
I did some research into having the battery changed vs. changing it myself, and in the course, I happened on the company portacomp, who apparently handle all repair jobs for cowon iAudio in Switzerland. They offered to replace the battery for 28 Swiss Francs (about 23 $US), including shipping, an offer I took without hesitation. After about a week, my X5 came back, the new battery was fully charged, and I got the great battery life I was used to from it. In order to test it, I left it to run down completely, with the intent of then charging it back up completely. However, once the battery was empty, the X5 refused to charge. It didn't even acknowledge that I had plugged it in, regardless of my using USB of the charger. I sent an email describing this to portacomp, and got an answer within hours. They were sending my a complete new X5 within the hour! They further asked if I might be so kind as to send them the defective X5. So to cap it all up, complete exchange of device for 28sFr, out of warantee. Pretty good service if you ask me. I highly recommend these guys.
