Default OGG Playback quality

Hi,

I tried putting a few ogg files on my D2 to test and I've come across a problem.
I've tried different encoders including the one supplied with jetaudio and different quality settings.
No matter how I encode them, I can always hear like a tinny/distortion sound throughout the tracks, normally where there's bass. I've found another thread on the F2 forum which details the symptoms better.

http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=12866

As soon as I copy the ogg files back to my PC they play fine.
Anybody else here having the same problem?
Could this be a fault on my player or is it a bit more serious?

Thanks
Steve

Try not to use the EQ end JetEffects.

I've got everything set to 0, and EQ is on USR all set at mid and I still hear the same problem.

I also forgot to mention, I've tried it with firmware version 2.21 & 3.41b and get the same problem.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

I can't say I've noticed any problems. All of my music is encoded with OggEnc2 at quality 6 (10 being the highest).

What quality setting are you using?

I'll have to convert one with Lame now to see if I can spot a difference.

EDIT, just tried a test with Kelis, Milkshake which is bass heavy. I tried Lame with the extreme preset and Oggenc2 at q6 and q7. Didn't find any issues with the bass at all.

Have you tried different headphones?

Thanks for your suggestions, but nothing seems to be working.
I've uploaded a couple of demo WAV files and given a bit more info at http://www.slawson.f2s.com/ so that people can compare for themselves.

Let me know what you think, and give me a shout if theres any more info I can provide.

Thanks

I can't download those files (I'm using Firefox).

Also, have you tried CD to WAV and then to target format? It might be that reading the FLAC is causing a problem with the Ogg encoder (which I have no experience of).

OK, I've just uploaded http://www.slawson.f2s.com/demofiles.zip
Its a 2.10Mb zip file containing the 2 WAV files.

I've also just used jetAudio to encode the track again from the original CD using the default OGG encoder set at 192Kbps VBR. I get exactly the same problem with this file. It plays fine on the PC, but as soon as I play it back on the D2, I get this echo/tinny/static noise throughout the track. I'm more and more convinced that its the D2 at fault. Question is, is it me/my player or are other people getting the same issue?

Thanks for your time on this mrsmr2, and FYI aoTuV is an improved version of the orginal OGG encoder from Xiph.org. Its still being actively developed, more info can be found here: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/...howtopic=49555

I can hear the differences in your two samples.

There is also some extra noise on the ogg version when played on my PC (but nothing like when played on the D2).

Therefore, it's an encoding problem, and the D2 might be more susceptible to it.

Can you try encoding on a different machine?

Or, send me the original wav and I'll convert here and send back.

I'm also not sure why you are converting back to wav format? Are you playing the mp3 and ogg files or these wav files on the D2?

mrsmr2, I've sent you a PM with a bit more info.

If anyone is interested in trying the ogg sample on their D2 or you want to encode the WAV file yourself, I've just updated http://www.slawson.f2s.com/ with my original ogg and wav samples.

Unfortunately, I get the same with that track.

I can't say I've noticed with any of my music but they don't have the same characteristics of this song - quiet with lots of bass.

Thanks for your help mrsmr2.

I've tried everything I can think of now, and I'm convinced that its the same problem as mentioned on the F2 thread. I've just tried joining cowonglobal in order to request support. I'm still waiting for a confirmation email, once I get any feedback I'll post here.

Regards

Good luck. I think it's impossible to join.

I registered last week, didn't recieve the activation e-mail, and now when I try and re-join, it says my user name is used. It also doesn't send me the password when I select the forgotten password option.

It's definitely a problem though (I would say it's the same as the F2 one). I still can't find any traces of the problem on my music but there is a nagging doubt that it's not handling the bass properly though.

I could only find the 'contact us' option as being of help there. That's an annying form - only a few fields are marked as mandatory but most of them have to be completed before the form is accepted.

Also, it's definitely not a spam mail issue - I have checked for that.

Hopefully, I can get registered so that I can officially register my D2 (just remembered i can't do that either).

Help same problem

hi,
I have the same problem with the vorbis-files.
i hear these errors only in vorbis files and in the bass-parts.
sry for my bad english.
I think it's a firmware or hardwareproblem of the d2!
MP3 and Flac are perfect.
hope cowon will fix that problem - anybody have news??
