Using portable profile, 320 x 240 (or below), 30fps at the moment for DivX on the Mac. Getting jerky playback. Perfectly acceptable, but Jetaudio clearly does a better job. Same for XVid encodes. Is there a solid encoding rule I can apply?

I use handheld (I think - at work so can't check) with xVid and all is fine. No jerkiness.
I've used both my video editor and virtual dub with xvid with no problems. What do you mean by jerkiness? Consistent slower frame rate, or occassional jerks in the footage? I've had consistent slower frame rate (in my case it looks like 12.5 fps instead of 25) when using other profiles in xvid and for a few profiles in Divx (haven't used divx much so not sure what the best profile to use is).
