Default Diy X5?

Heya guys.
My X5 has pretty much hit the dust a year or so younger than I expected. I don't have the money/time/patience/warranty to send it back to be fixed so I was wondering whether it were possible to salvage the player and create a frankenstien player. As far as I know the hard drive and screen work fine but there's something funky with the headphone out, firmware/processor and the joystick.
So my question for you: does anyone know of something out there that'll let me enjoy my music on the super cheap? I should just be buying a new player but I need one with at least 4gb and in NZ that's $250+ that I don't have.
If all else fails I'll flog the parts and make myself a 1.8" external hdd.
Cheers all!
