msg431: this simply means that 10.000 is the maximum number of music files X5 can handle (using the current firmware)

The specs:

MK3006GAL (30 GB)
Height 0.197" (5mm)
Width 2.12" (54mm)
Depth 3.09" (78.5mm)
Weight 1.8 oz (51g)

MK6008GAH (60 GB)
Height 0.31" (8mm)
Width 2.12" (54mm)
Depth 2.79" (71mm)
Weight 2.01 oz (59g)

MK8007GAH (80 GB)
Height 0.31" (8mm)
Width 2.12" (54mm)
Depth 3.09" (78.5mm)
Weight 2.2 oz (62g)

iAUDIO X5
Height 0.56" (14.3mm)
Width 2.39" (60.8mm)
Depth 4.08" (103.7mm)

iAUDIO X5L / X5 60GB
Height 0.72" (18.3mm)
Width 2.39" (60.8mm)
Depth 4.08" (103.7mm)

I do not know how the battery fits in or the chipset and such in the unit, but these are some general specs. The 80 GB is a bit deeper than the 60 GB, so it may not work. does anyone know enough to make their own casing? I rather doubt it, but that is the last resort. or perhaps the smaller battery will have to do until a smaller, but better battery finds its way on the market. anyone have any other ideas?? I don't have the time right now to find out any more, since I need some major rest, but I hope this helps someone.

Maybe we should talk to someone of the hacking & modding-team if there´s a way to change the file-limit (maybe hex?). Would be great.

Default The X5 HD Replacement Thread

I just found the Toshiba MK8009GAH HDD...

It has nearly the same specification as the MK2006GAL (which i think is build in my x5 30GB)

MK2006GAL:
  • Capacity: 30GB
  • Form factor: 1.8 inch
  • Interface type: 1.8 inch emdedded ATA
  • Supply voltage: +3.3 V (+/-5 %)
  • Drive width: 54 mm
  • Drive height: 5.0 mm
  • Drive depth: 78.5 mm
  • Drive weight: 0.051 kg
Full specification: link

MK8009GAH
  • Capacity: 80GB
  • Form factor: Short FF, 1.8 inch
  • Interface type: 1.8 inch ATA (ZIF)
  • Supply voltage: +3.3 V (+/-5 %)
  • Drive width: 54 mm
  • Drive height: 8.0 mm
  • Drive depth: 71 mm
  • Drive weight: 0.059 kg
Full specification: link

The only two problems i see are: the special ATA interface called "ZIF" (does anyone know if this is compatible with normal ATA interfaces?)
and the drive height, which is 8mm instead of 3mm

So, could it be that in a normal x5 there would be enough space for an 8mm thick hdd?
What do you think?

That would be soooooo nice

Judging by my m3, nope. I swapped in a slightly wider and longer cell phone battery and had to ditch the rubber mat from between the battery and hdd (I put tape on the back of the hdd instead). Anyway, that rubber mat was very thin... there wasn't a lot of spare room.

FYI, the 80gb 8mm thick has two platters, the 30gb is 5mm and one platter. There is a 40gb single platter hdd, but for the price I'd guess you'd better off selling you current dap and buying another one.

This would probably work as a replacement drive for the 60 gig folks. The height of 8mm is the same as the Toshiba MK6006GAH which I belive is what is in our 60 gig X5.

If it did work, it would be in the 60 gig, and even then it might not work due to interface.

Default Fyi

This thread is dead but i might as well say

The X5L is powered by 2 batteries. That is, a regular battery (stowed under the hard drive out of sight) and a large battery that goes on top of the hard drive. I have opened up my 20gb X5L and here is what I found:

The unit will power up with the larger battery removed. And the larger battery is connected with a simple plug that can be disconnected and reconnected.
This means there is probably space.

The hard drive(right below the large battery) is connected to the x5 via a piece of PC board with connecting pins which is attached to the main board with a ribbon cable. you can simply pop out the PC board and the hard drive is free.

There is labeling inside that identifies my unit as a version one 20gb x5L, which makes me wonder if maybe it won't work with a different hard drive.

Default Make more space inside an X5L

To whoever is researching this hard drive replacement thing, and for those who don't know: The X5L is powered by 2 batteries, not just one.

You can simply unplug the large battery at its connector, pry it off the back of the hard drive(I did this brazenly and nothing went wrong) and the player will power on as usual, powered by the smaller battery which is under the hard drive out of sight. This should free up a lot of space.

Has no one tried simply swapping in a different hard drive? And by that I mean, any hard drive that isn't the same kind that came in your X5? just to see if it would work. It is only a question of pulling the connector out of your old drive (easy, hold it by the sides and pull) and connecting it to another drive.

I'm pretty sure it needs to be 5mm. Only the X5L will accept the 8mm. Check this thread.

It would require much more than changing a number in hex. The OF allocates exactly 10000 "songinfo" structs, so you'd have to move things around in memory and change loop counter in various places.

The easiest way to go is Rockbox, as you will lose warranty anyway when you open it up to change HDD.

Umm...rockbox can only handle up to 10000 files in one view. It can handle more than 10000items if not viewed at the same time(the list should be 10000 long or less).

The MK2006GAL is a 20GB drive, so it can't be the one in the 30Gb X5. My best guess is that it's the sister drive the MK3006GAL.

Here's a link to the whole drive family:
http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Pat...0659c000026bd/

My 30GB X5 has two dead spots on the drive already, so I have to think about replacing it soon. Has anyone cracked open their 30GB X5 and can confirm the drive model?

Thanks,
Dan

With my recently broken X5 (HDD failure), I think I will crack it open and find some info for you guys. Anything I need to know before I begin?

Default Toshiba has a 100 GB hard drive on the way

Toshiba announced that they plan to release a 100GB 1.8" hard drive next month. It should work in place of the 60GB hard drive, with obvious limitation being the X5 firmware's file limit.

It might be worth a try with Rockbox as my 60 is getting closer and closer to full.
