The X5 HD Replacement Thread

A new 80Gb 1.8-inch hdd has recently appeared on Toshiba's web site (MK8007GAH; http://sdd.toshiba.com). The form factor of this drive seems to be exactly the same as that of MK3006GAL (X5 drive). It is only slightly heavier (62g versus 51g) and requires a bit more power to run (start power 1.8 watts versus 1.2 watts). Soon it will be sold at www.span.com (http://www.span.com/catalog/product_...ducts_id=6016). The purpose of this thread is to discuss whether an existing X5 drive can be replaced with this new drive. We need careful evaluation of this possibility by forum members who have their backgrounds in electronics/engineering.

:hi: RECENT UPDATE: Very recently Toshiba corrected a typo on their web site. We now know that the 80GB 2-platter drive is 8 mm high, not 5mm like it was thought previously. Therefore, the drive will fit ONLY in the X5/60GB case. An X5L case may also be modified to accommodate MK8007GAH if the long life battery is replaced with a standard one...

If this works, this is what I've been waiting for. Furthermore, the 10.000-file limit has to be removed/enlarged from the X5 firmware for an 80GB-HDD to be really useful.

I hope there's no typo on Toshiba's website - and the single-platter 30GB MK3006GAL and the two-platter 80GB MK8007GAH really do have the same height.

As a bonus, the MK8007GAH does consume even less power (0.00375W/GB) than the MK3006GAL (0.01W/GB), except for the startup- and seek-part. This might give even longer playtime.

I agree that there may be a typo (the actual height may well be 8mm as for other 1.8-inch 2-platter drives from Toshiba). I've just sent an email to Toshiba asking for clarification. Lets see what they say.

It was indeed a typo. Toshiba responded to my e-mail by changing the height of MK8007GAH to 8mm. This means that the drive will only fit into X5L/X560GB. Bad news. :thumbsdow

What's the biggest drive that we can conceivably fit into a regular X5 then? I mean...I'll never use 80 gigs...

As far as I know, the biggest capacity 5mm high drive from Toshiba is the MK4007 with 40GB. But that a perpendicular drive, I don't know if those work in the X5.

Good for you... I have around 250 GB of audio, so I'd really like at least a 80 GB drive.

Congrats, there was no need for such a dismissive start to your reply. I was just wondering if there was anything smaller that we could conceivably use. That reply wasn't necessary or helpful at all.

I see no reason why a perpendicular drive like MK4007GAL (but NOT a 2-platter 8mm MK4007GAH) would not work in X5. The MK4007GAL's physical dimensions seem to be compatible. Cheers.

Oh, and the biggest drive fitting in a regular X5 at the moment would be the 40GB perpendicular drive, I suppose.

so i guess this 80 gig gonna be double platter rite??cos to my knowledge,single platter highest only 30 gig while 40 gig is on its way.
