At the moment I have an iRiver H120 and I am still very happy with it. Great sound. However I am considering to buy a new player with a color screen. Because I want to have the same features and also a good sound and the possibility of Rockbox, I think I will have to decide between the iRiver H320 and the iAudio X5 (or X5L). Although the H320 is discontinued, after extensive searching I found a shop where I can still buy a brand new one.
The iAudio X5 (L) however is also very tempting, although it is more expensive, particularly because I will have to add the costs of a good case. There are 3 things that I am a little concerned about with the X5: 1) The need to use that "sub" thing for charging and file exchange 2) The reports about failing joystick 3) The reports about failing headphone jacks. How serious are these concerns and what would be a wise decision ? Thanks in advance. |

You have to use the sub pack to download and charge no way around that one. My joystick does stick once in a while but nothing to worry about. Never had an issue with the headphone jack or anything like that.
I have had mine since March and use it practially every day and have had no problems with it. yea get the L version it is worth it for the battery life.

Headphone jacks with the X5 are just as common as in other players. Joystick problems are a little more rampant, but if you use some common sens and don't thrash your player, you should be fine. What is your concern with the subpack? It is a bit fragile; it's made of plastic and the metal connector bends a little. It also doesn't have any grip on the X5, so it comes out easily. This low friction is a pro and a con.

Not so much the construction, but more the fact that you need it every time you want to charge or connect to your pc. With my H120 and the H320 you can connect directly to the pc or to the charger.
Btw, is a USB OTG cable included in the package ? |

I've had my X5 for getting close to a year now, and I've noticed the joystick is starting to get loose. It is a problem, and many people have had to get their player serviced to fix it. In my opinion it is the major design flaw for the device. The subpack is kind of annoying, and to keep from having to carry it back and forth to the office every day or possibly lose it on a trip I bought two spares (9 bucks each). I leave one at the office, one at home, and have one for travelling. The headphone jack problem seems to be due to a weakly mounted jack. All headphone jacks will be subject to a loose connection with the headphone's plug over time, but this headphone jack also is subject to loosening off the board, there was a thread here where someone took it apart and saw the not so strong connection to motherboard.
Yes, a USB-OTG cable is included in the box.

Overall though it's a very solid player, and it's features are lightyears ahead of competition.

1) the subpack you would probably get used to. I leave my cables plugged into the subpack at home and just plug the subpack in when I need to charge or transfer files. Like Zeus's Uncle I have a spare subpack and cables that I carry around. It bugged me when I first got it, but not anymore 2) My joystick is fine, I've had it for almost a year now 3) ditto. If the battery life is important to you, then the X5L is worth the price difference. I don't know of any other player with that much playtime. Otherwise the regular X5 (which i have) is on par with other players regarding battery life. |

I did the same thing, I went from an H120 to an X5L. Overall I'm happy. It's not as slick or impressive as an ipod 5G but the sound is much better, there are more features and the battery kicks ass (X5L). The joystick seems a little fragile but I've had no problems so far (4-5 months usage). Subpack is no big deal, it's really small and unobtrusive.
Overall, the X5L is not a completely perfect player but as far as non-ipod players go it's pretty good. If I had to buy another player tomorrow I probably would go with an X5L again. |
