Default "USB Device not recognized"

After only a few days of use, my iAudio 6 stopped being able to establish a connection with any computer. Otherwise, used on its own, it works perfectly, I can play music, view videos and use all of its functions -- but I haven't been able to upload/download files from it since then. So now it's basically a simple radio with a few dozens of MP3s and a couple of other things on it. I have no idea what triggered this change, I don't remember changing anything on the PC at around that time that could have had this effect. I have tried connecting it to at least 3 different computers. The only thing that may have something to do with it is that I have done the upgrade to 1.20 but I cannot recall exactly if that coincided with the appearance of the problem.

Whenever I try plugging it into a PC, the same message appears: "USB Device not recognized -- One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it." Before, it had been successfully connected a couple of times, and I had been able to upload stuff onto it. (And yes, I always used a rear USB, not the front ones, etc etc... I made sure I tried everything I could find on forums dealing with this dreaded error message.)

A few weeks ago, I had it sent over to the local Cowon service people, and they sweared it would be fixed, as they had never received a player they couldn't fix. They told me about a service driver, reformatting, reinstalling, reinitializing, all those sweet-sounding words, so I was very hopeful -- they seemed totally sure of the success. Two weeks later they sent it back with a simple note saying "cannot be serviced".

Replacing it seems to be the only option now, but as the player was purchased in Japan, that is more than a bit of a hassle to do. So, if anyone can offer some advice on ancient top-secret i6 necromancy practices, I'd be thankful!

Look at settings if your i6 is not in a MTP mode of USB. I do not have i6 but on U3 with firmware 1.20 the player is in MTP mode by default, so you must change it to UMS mode. On U3 it is in Settings -> General -> USB connection.

That was one of the first things I found on the forums, so of course it's been switched to UMS the whole time. I tried everything from cleaning the Windows registry in safe mode to holding the Mode button down on the player while connecting, to no avail.
