Default can't get rockbox to work

i'm following this: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=3177.msg22586 guide, trying to install rockbox on my x5. i extract the .bin file to the firmware folder and the daily update .zip folder to the main directory of the unit. I go to plug in the unit, but nothing happens. it just says it's charging. when i turn the x5 on, it starts like it normally did before i attempted the installation. what is this guide missing? or what am i doing wrong? I really know nothing about rockbox and very little about DAPs so i'd appreciate it if you could be as thorough as possible. thanks.

the X5 will look for a file named x5_fw.bin in the firmware directory and upgrade from it when you connect AC. check the name.

some step is getting skipped...there's no reason you'd be the only to have a problem getting it to work. which is easy and only takes these steps to work.
1) download the bootloader (x5_fw.bin) and copy it into the X5\FIRMWARE folder.
2) download a rockbox build. if its a zip make sure to unzip it and then copy the .rockbox folder and rockbox.iaudio file into the root directory of the X5.
3) disconnect from computer and connect the AC adapter and firmware will upgrade as usual.

Are you patching the cowon fw file with the Rockbox bootloader?

Then you aren't and that's probably why it isn't working for you.

See the sticky thread "Where to begin with Rockbox?" for information on patching & using mkboot-x5.

thanks for your reply. as i stated earlier, i'm very new to this technology, so I'm still a bit confused. i went to the thread you suggested and found this:

Since Rockbox on X5 is still in the early stages, the only way to patch the firmware with the bootloader is with tools/mkboot-x5 from the Rockbox source. That means setting up a Linux/vmware/cygwin dev environment.

Code:

./mkboot-x5 firmware.bin bootloader.bin x5_fw.bin

could somebody explain this a little more clearly? thanks.

Ok what you need is a build of Rockbox, this is the one I'm using.

http://www.filefactory.com/file/b77307/

You also need a bootloader.

http://www.devastator.atomhosting.in...bootloader.zip

Unzip the Rockbox build and place the .rockbox folder and the rockbox.iaudio file in the root directory of the player's hard drive.
It should look like this:

Now, all you need to do is unzip the bootloader, and place the x5_fw.bin into the FIRMWARE directory seen at the above image. Turn the X5 off. Now just attach the x5 to the subpack while it's connected to the ac adapter (do not have the usb cable plugged into the subpack) and it will begin flashing the firmware.

If for whatever reason you want to use the Original Fimware just hold the reset button as you turn it on.

hope this helped.

Are you sure that you have an X5 and not an X5V?
