Default Fiio E17 Thoughts?

I noticed it arrived on Amazon.com for around $150. I'm very happy with the E11. Is there anyone here who has both? If so is it worth the money if you already have an E11?

do you want an really experienced opinion?... only in combination with e9... and even so, the price will go too high... fiio e9+e17 is not the best at that money... if i am right, at those money you could but a better amp... (and fiio e9+e17 is not a portable rig...)

the point is that fiio is really weak at amplifying... try it with hd800, or lcd's, or akg q701 or even with the ie8's from sennheisers, or monster turbines pro, or, ultimate ears...

and then try any of these headphones with a better amplifier, like ibasso, or, for non portable, schiit lyr...

fiio is not cheap enough for it's wuality... but is great for going one signal into 2 headphones... i mean, there is no signal lost, and it plays it great!... but that is the most you will ever get from fiio...

Last time I checked into the ibasso which was the D100. From what I read it's a Player, Amp, EQ, all in one and it was several hundred dollars. I should have said I own a Cowon J3, my bad.

I own the ibasso t5 and the FiiO e11,...both do the job equally well.

Yes,...it's better to get some Android pmp (or a clip+ or clipzip) & a fiio, plus a nice set of iem/hp's than buy the dx100. The sq won't be any better on the dx100.

take a pair of hd800 from sennheiser, a schiit lyr or any lamp based ampifier for headphones, a source, like a computer, with a very nice soundcard, spend over 10.000$, and you are in the real music heaven...

cheaper option?...

take cowon j3, a pair of ie8's and no amplifier... it will be around 500$ if you fiind the good deals, and it will be better than anything at this price... do not buy an amplifier for unneeded things...

fiio?... buy it for other purposes... it is cheap, not reliable, and it doesn't change the sound quality, by more than 5%... do not try to take a rig with portable amplifier for jogging, or for any portable use... belive me, it is not reliable... not even in a bus, it is not very reliable...

No quality amp changes the sound of the source, except if there's a bass boost switch/settings. And schitt amps suck, the O2 is superior in every way. And fiio amps are great for what they need to do - power a hard to drive or inefficient set of iem/hp's. The truth is the truth,...audiophile speak doesn't change facts.

Search either site for the answers to some questions you might have. Avoid head-fi.org - unless you like to spend money on products that get boosted in the forums because they're paying money into the site. Biased, isn't it.

The E17's have dropped in price to $140. I'm trying to hold off until they get to $95

I've just bought a Cowon Z2 should arrive tomorrow via UPS.

I think the E17 is a good product. Who the hell goes jogging with a dap+amp? That's just a silly argument - you may as well complain that it's no good for juggling chainsaws either. How can you make any sort of claim about exactly how much the sound quality changes? You're pulling that 5% figure out of your derriere.

I use mine out of my laptop with foobar 2K + wasapi, and it does a nice job with my customs and full-size cans, though both are relatively easy to drive (they do both benefit from amping, however). It has a dac which is capable of 24/192 playback with the spdif or 24/96 via usb. It has 3 gain settings and you can eq the treble and bass. The body is aluminum and I think the build quality is very good at this price.

With the J3, which I also have, it only serves as an amp since there is no line out. I don't often amp my J3, but occasionally I do for shits and giggles and it hasn't failed me yet, even as I drive to work on occasionally bumpy roads on a moped. If you're only planning to use this for hard-to-drive headphones with your J3, than it's not a bad option, nor is it the best either since you can't take advantage of the dac. If your headphones are easy to drive, an amp isn't necessary - that I agree with. The J3 is pretty robust in this respect.

Back to the E17 - it will drive headphones up to 300 ohms, which isn't too shabby. If you have problems with the build quality, they do have a 1 year warranty, but it doesn't transfer to 3rd parties. There are definitely other good options in this price range, so do your research, consider exactly how you'll be using an amp in order to avoid paying for extra features you're not going to use, and only purchase from an authorized retailer to avoid hassles should you need to make a warranty claim, regardless of the brand you end up choosing.
