Song Count mess up??!

So on my computer, i click on my music folder and look at its properties and it says there are around 5500 files in that folder, and since that's a folder full of music...one would only assume that means there are 5500 songs. then i transfered music over to my player and it only says there are 3000...wtf? i mean, i worked hard to get 5500 songs, if someone picks up my player, i want them to be amazed at my 5500 songs! whats the deal?!?!
