it loads the in-progress daily-builds from the developers, but it'll currently overwrite the iaudio firmware...

Right, but it can be restored the same way you install updates. And the in-progress daily builds are fairly advanced. Everything is working except for an audio driver. As soon as that's completed, it will be a viable alternate to the current Cowon Firmware. And Rockbox development goes much, much faster, because it is open source, and there are many other devices working well with Rockbox (iriver H300). Rockbox has id3 browsing, games, pictures, and album art. We will probably see the audio driver soon (sooner than id3 from cowon), so just hang in there!

they only say "audio driver"... does that mean rb won't play any audio at all or just some formats?

I thought rockbox is mainly text-based?
...thats not because there are no graphics yet. Yes, some themes add backgrounds for the menu and customized wps's, but not more.

Is it possible the rockbox firmware will eventually have greater compatibility with file formats than the X5 ships with?

Eventually?

These are the formats that Rockbox supports today on the X5:

A52, AAC, AIFF, ALAC, FLAC, MP1, MP2, MP3, MPC, Shorten, OGG/Vorbis, WAV and Wavpack.

Rockbox supports WMA as well, although it's said to be a bit buggy. You can find out how to sue WMA files in the rockbox forums somewhere(can't find link now).

I'm confused, didn't someone just say it only supports MP3 at the moment, and the playback isn't very good?
