u2 cant get into recovery mode!

I've had this U2 for about 3 months & have had no problems with it previously, though it stopped working for no apparent reason today. I put it into recovery mode - managed to back up all the data from the flash drive & then ran the 1.60 firmware installer. The firmware update all went smoothly & was verified. I then copied over the backup & disconnected the U2 from usb.
Then I tried to turn it on...
The iaudio screen came up for about a second then disappeared & then repeated this for a few times, & finally just went blank.
Now the U2 will not reset & it will not go into recovery mode, though every half an hour or so the iaudio logo comes up & disappears...
I think its stuck somewhere in the bootup & cant recognise commands because of it, so im hoping that the battery will run flat after a few days...
Other than that, I have no idea what to try...

Does anyone have any ideas as to how to fix this?
