I am considering purchasing one. I do not consider myself a lazy consumer, but have not found a lot of players that meet my needs. The biggest thing I need is ability to record fm and ability to record line in. There are not many players that do those two things.

well, I was first seaching a new MP3 and I found that J3 is one of the best mp3 player. I have a Sony walkman series S 16 GB which as a 42h battery for listen to music, 6 h of video, record FM and voice, watch your pictures and have a external speaker. I have it for 2 years. I also saw several acticles which said that J3 will be discontinued so I try to find another MP3. Is it the cowon x9 can be a alternative? I want a MP3 that have a Micro SD slot, a battery higher than 42h and without android since it kills the battery. If any of you know where can I buy a J3 and ship to Canada. If not I will just buy the cowon x9 16 gb on exportprive since I have a micro sd 32 gb.

The X9 is significantly bigger and reportedly has a resistive touchscreen. Personally I wouldn't touch anything with a resistive screen, but that's just me. Generally I fail to understand Cowon's strategy here... they prematurely and deliberately(?) terminated one of their most successful products (J3) without introducing a proper replacement model. I would guess its already challenging to sell dedicated media players in this time and age (because of the pressure from smartphones etc), this kind of move must hurt their sales even further. Seems like they're digging their own grave here

Just been following the thread here and and out of curiosity why do you need a battery life of greater than 42 hours xDTx. i presume you dont have it on all the time so are you really away from a charging power source for that long!!!! Its not a criticism just would love to know the reason.
And el maco Cowon are in business and they have not gone bust like a lot of other companies so I presume that they survive because they have read when to discontinue non selling players and have introduced new players regularly to I presume fill holes in the market that can make money for them. Its clear Cowon are in the market to make money not MP3players or the like.
They make these devices to achieve the goal of making money. BUT having said all that I also have problems with what they do and produce because it always is close to exactly what I want but not quite exactly what i want.
BUT I have come to the conclusion that it could possibly be me who is looking for something that nobody makes or is gonna make for this market of one (me).
Sorry for the rant.
What I want is 160gb like the X7, 24hr+ battery life like the X7, plays ALL formats for music and video. A good touch screen like the Z2, has Android like the Z2 etc. I dont want a 32gb player with massive sd cards hanging from them. Is it really only me that wants this player.

well the reason that I want a battery life greater than 42 h is that I listen at least 30 h a month and I like to change the music by myself rather than listen on random which I think can double the use of the battery. I'm not away from a charging power source but it is just that I should charge the battery 2-3 per month. With the x9 I think it would be 1-2 time per 2 month. I don't understand why people are taking the x7. Do you think that 160 gb is too much. I understand that people buy the x7 for video, but I prefer to watch directy online on my laptop rather than on a small screen. Also, do you think that android is a heavy software that can kill the battery life? I don't have any android devices. Do you think that Cowon should create their own software just like the x7 and the x9? Can you you see that Z2 has only I think 22 h?

As I travel around the world (72 flights last year), i like to take all my music and video with me. On planes you cannot watch online video. Sure some have got in flight films but not all and I cant remember the number of half films I have watch this way.
My Z2 can last a 12 hour flight with a bit of sleeping and the odd film so it is enough for me. I get to my hotel and put everything on charge. Its just a habit and takes about a minute to do.
Also I like playing around with Android apps it passes many hours when sitting ion airports. So you see for me a and big capacity Android would be great if the battery could last 24hrs that's even better for when I have to stay overnight in an airport due to the inevitable delays.

I've been away for a while bc btwn here & head-fi, my habit was becoming costly. :-) Yesterday, I tripped over a flowerbed and fell on my V5. The screen is shot so I need to replace it. I know the screen quality & resolution weren't great, but the V5 did the job for me. I used it to watch videos. I'd like smthng that can play as many video formats as the V5 and a screen size/resolution at least as good as the V5 and none of the cowon products to be released seem to fit the bill. Replacing with another V5 is expensive so I was thinking that maybe I should look at a tablet (nothing as large as the ipad). Any suggestions or am I overlooking something? Thanks in advance.

Just Thought people might want some updates

Cowon X9

Previous MP3 player was a Microsoft Zune HD and this is my first product from Cowon.
I ordered it from amazon via global priority shipping and received it in exactly 18 hours. Super fast service, extremely pleased with this fast delivery (In Canada).

some feedback from my first day usage
  • Extremely Good Sound Quality, a definite upgrade from my Zune HD (Zune HD sound quality is amazing as well)
  • Long Battery Life
  • Decent UI, although can't be compared with the Zune HD
  • Looks very nice, dunno if that changes anything
  • New Jeteffect, although from what I hear it isn't much of a upgrade
  • Definitely just a straight-up player for music purposes only. For people who already have smartphones/superphones and don't need an android device like the Z2 Plenue. If anyone is debating between a Z2 Plenue or X9 it's really about if you want a straight up mp3 player with long ass battery life with much cheaper price. Those who don't care about the battery life or do not have a smartphone can definitely look into the Z2, although the price is higher.
  • Same controls as the J3, but the screen is hella hard to move

In a nutshell, X9 is just a player with nothing "new" or "exciting" features but for someone who wants easy and a simple time listening to music.
Ah, forgot to mention the long battery life is beneficial for videos as well. Prob can watch like 24 hours straight of video playback lol

Just my 2 cents

So the biggest knock is the touch screen, because it's not very responsive? Have you played any videos? If so how's the quality on the low rez screen?

I have a Cowon C2 and that screen is also not very responsive. I have to use a Q-Tip and then the touch screen is acceptable. I still have my Zune HD, awesome device to this day. I've converted since to Cowon players.

Thanks for the report ByShine. One thing I'd want to know is if you think the player is too BIG for general portable audio use, especially travel. I like my D2 and don't mind the resistive touchscreen, but could imagine a bigger screen being easier to use. The x9 resolution seems too low for video but I don't care much about video.

I like the idea of super long battery runtime for travel since charging is not always convenient. Of course removable batteries are even better.

I notice that the Archos 48 is available again, for anyone wanting a high capacity hard disk player. It uses a 500GB laptop drive and you can swap in a 1TB drive from what I hear. It comes with Android 1.6 (yuck) but there is a Cyanogen port (2.3 I think). SQ is supposed to be ok, probably not as good as an x7/x9. Battery life is probably terrible. I'm still thinking of getting one because it's kind of a unique item and supplies will probably dry up again soon.

[Added]: I've mentioned this in connection with some other players but it's dumb that they put a microsdhc slot into the X9 instead of full sized sdhc/sdxc. Full size would allow adding a 128gb card for $100 or so today, giving equivalent capacity to the x7, and there have to be 256gb cards coming pretty soon.

No matter what cowon claim to say, looking at the specs It's clear that the model presented here is a replacement for the J3 and NOT EVEN A SUCCESSOR of it. I can even call this a J3+ in some way since its support flash video what I found nice.

Now if I follow the cowon logic correctly when they will show us the J3 successor we can expect to see a HDD player..

Seriously is time to save funds for food & water storage if you know what I mean!

I get the impression that there have been multiple parallel lines of development in Cowon (maybe separate design groups): D2/S9/J3, O2/V5/X7/X9, D3/Z2. So there may still be a J3 successor coming.

I like to hope flash video is on its way out, in favor of m4v or whatever. X9 has too low res for a video player anyway.

The X9 kind of intrigues me but it's an awfully big player by today's standards. It seems like sort of a last gasp for this style of player.

Okay, so this is the successor of X7 ... Our hope is that better CPU and Flash upgrade, because it is possible to create a smooth interface.

GUI looks very nice, though. Better way than J3, X7 graphical user interface.
