Did you try this from the Cowon site?:
How can I do system recover? 1. Press Play/Pause button and connect Adaptor. 2. Press Play/Pause button until enter to recovery mode. 3. When it is recovery mode, press home button to display 4 menus as below. Use Volume +/- buttons to move and Play/Pause button to select. 1> Reboot system now – recovery mode – off and restart device. 2> Apply sdcard:update.zip – update by /sdcard/sd/update.com in SD card. 3> Apply nand:update.zip – update by sdcard/update.zip in NAND. 4> Re-install current version – update to previous firmware. 4. Menu will appear after install update. Please reboot system now to restart and update firmware. |

Mine started doing the same. No luck with updates so far...
SOLVED Issue is probably with Dalvick Cache or something similar. Solution is to use Cowon Gingerbread update tool and flash from there as it does erase pretty much everything, which a simple update using a SD card does not... Alternatively could use ADB directly but I had trouble getting the PC to access the D3...

so my D3 just wouldn't start at all
and i started looking at what would be my fourth Cowon, the new Z... but after reading here, decided I couldn't risk another 'brick'my Sony Walkman NWZ-Z1000 is now just over a month old and I love it. Which is sad for Cowon, because it seems to me that Sony have taken Cowon's ideas and made them work. Soundwise, it seems about the same as the S9/D3, but with its onboard external speaker too. Loading and manipulating music and data is a breeze. I must comment on the sensme (sp?) thing which pretty much does away with the need for play lists. Not that there's a problem creating and using them Web browsing is a doddle and it has a much stronger WIFI signal / pick up than my D3 ever did But most of all. I haven't done anything to it to make it work, It just does Still love my S9 (only Cowon not bricked), though it has tried a number of times |

Have you tried what I said? My D3 have trouble starting yesterday. Reinstalling .53 fixed it. I think the Z2 has a better recovery option.

I had the same issue and had to return it to Cowon. They sent a refurbished one. It was still under warranty.

Same here. As of right now, the D3 is the only 'droid PMP i know of with SPDIF out, working tactile media buttons, external micro sd card, 32gb internal memory etc. Hoping to get at least another year out of it despite the well known congenital problems and various recent issues which I'm hoping will be fixed when I get round to reinstalling the firmware.
