My new 32gb J3 just arrived. No SDHC card yet, but I'll add one soon. What do guys recommend doing first (after giving it a charge)?
In particular, before I do anything else, should I reformat the internal memory with the Panasonic SD formatter utility? After that, do recommend installing the Cowon SW that came with it, or just use 3rd party apps and manually transfer files to it as a disk drive? (I plan to follow the flac & eac guides from the encoding section of the forum to make high-quality rips of my cds.) Should I try the Cowen interface for a while before I try some of the UCIs like the beautiful ones from Kizune? Any other getting started tips? While waiting for it to arrive, I've enjoyed reading the wealth of information you have provided on this forum. I'll try to not ask too many (more) boring/repetitive questions. Thanks for your advice! |

it's not all that necessary to format the device but it can be good practice
![]() i use the Drag'N'Drop Folder/File Method as most users do. i don't use Software as that can sometimes mess up Devices as it has done in the past for me. you can use the main Default UIs but i urge you to try out some from HERE (My UCI Build Pack) which contains nearly all UI here on the Forums and over @Naver (Korea's based cowon UI Forum based site) only one UI that's not there is Cheetah which is still in beta to which i don't add yet Link be sure to read the full first post before downloading

The first thing you do once you get your music on it? Get a nice cool drink, put on your headphones, put your feet up, and relax to enjoy the music.

Update your firmware, get a UCI from this forum, like Lynx or the still developing Cheetah
Also look at Sense, the greatest ever music UCI And Leaf, the greatest ever browser UCI Then you can play flash games!

Sense is a great little music UI... It's best to start off with it, rather than waiting until you are too attached to the matrix browser (it's like coverflow). Kizune decided it slowed down his UI too much.

Thanks for all the good advice.
Had a bit of a scare on startup. I was fiddling around with the cover to the usb port so I could give it the initial charge. (I had trimmed my fingernails the day before. In the future I will need to coordinate nail trims with the days I need to charge the device!) Then I noticed the screen was on. Unfortunately, all the menus were in Hebrew! I must have punched the power button and then hit an initial language choice while I was fiddling with the bottom of the device. Fortunately, after a 4h initial charge, when I turned it on again, it asked me for my language choice again. If it had stuck with Hebrew, it would have been difficult for me to navigate to the settings menu to change that. Looks like the firmware is 2.23. From the comments in the firmware section it sounds like it would be good to upgrade to 2.26, or to 2.28 if I want to give up a little UI speed for improved battery life. (Or wait a little longer for 2.29 to get vetted.) |

I have 2.29, and haven't had any issues with it.
