For those wishing to replace the battery

Since the J3 is discontinued in production, the time for looking for replacement parts is probably right now (while available, and before they break).

After watching this j3 disassembly video, and seeing the battery specs:

I went on radioshack, and found this:

I'm creating this thread primarily for batteries, but I think it might be good to also catalog replacement parts in general. As time goes on, it might become more difficult to find parts for these wonderful players.

sorry, this one is a LOT weaker than j3 one... you have to fiind one that would have more mAh...

That is what is quoted as being the spec directly on the battery for mAh by someone that took their J3 apart. If you are referring to Wh, the last link I had was one of the few that bothered to post that spec, and it matches the one on the J3 for Wh.

*edit* I just realized that with that voltage and mAh, that the Wh would be implicit to match. If someone wants to post a pic of the battery inside the J3, to provide a different spec, I will be happy to update and search for a more suitable replacement.

I'm not sure it would fit in a J3, but here is a D2 replacement battery with 3.7V and 1800 mAh.

Granted this is for an iphone, but it does match in voltage, and appears to have a higher mAh rating, as well as appearing to be the right size to fit in a J3.

just be carefull, some batteries have a control chip attached, others dont and just have two wires directly attached to the cells, im not sure which the j3 uses as that chip is usually semi\totally hidden under the shrink wrap.

also the measurements will have to be exact as there are many different sizes with dimensions altering by as low as 0.5mm in any direction.

Thank you, I was not aware of the control chip issue (which limits comparability, beyond simple V & mAh specs). What role do the control chips have, beyond possible voltage regulation? Knowing what they do is pretty important in knowing how critical it is to be concerned with them.

*edit* I just looked it up, and apparently these IC's are used for monitoring battery charge primarily.

Yes, they protect against overcharge or too deep discharge. The same functionality may be built in to the electronics of the device. But if it is missing altogether bad(tm) things may happen when you charge the device. Bad as in explosively bad.

If that is the case, and there is no way to find out the specifics of the J3 battery... I'm starting to think it might be better/easier to just rig up an external battery pack with 3 AA batteries in series (my rechargeable AA's that I use are 1.2V and 1900 mAh).

Here's that same battery (same site you listed) and this one has a protection circuit integrated with it. It's $6 more, but I think that's cheap in the grand scheme of things, if it keeps it from exploding. This would still require an external battery pack, though (as it is about 2X as thick as the J3.

I dug around further on the site... This one looks like it might be a perfect drop in replacement (will need to get some battery measurements), and have close to double the battery life of the stock battery... It also has the protection PCB on it, and is cheaper than the other two options.

It's listed at $17.95

yeah $6 to save getting it wrong isnt a bad choice, you can always remove the chip if needed and if your going to open up to replace you will know what you need when you examine the battery inside.

the one thing i have to get my head around is the battery C rating, which is something to do with the discharge rate, on the rc packs and others that require high power draw that rating can go up to about 40c, i cannot say if too much 'C' on a low draw device such as the j3 would be bad for the battery or device in some way.

if the above fits ok it looks like a nice choice.

wondering if anyone could tell me if i should keep the existing citcuit:

or replace it with the one from the old j3 battery. both being 3.6-3.7v no idea what the overdrain and Overdischarge limit's should be :\

i get worried:

Li-Ion battery may be exploded if miss-using. We are not responsible for any damages or losses caused by misuse.

i dont want my j3 to be exploding so i wanna do it safely
