A3 with new HDD not recognized

Hello, after crashing the standard hdd on my A3 (gravity is an awful thing at times), I bought a 80Gb Samsung HS082HB as replacement. After installing it and connecting it with USB to my XP laptop, the A3 cycles through the startup screen, showing the USB connect logo for a second or two and then going back to the Cowon logo. No chance to format it or even see it in XP.
Any idea what's going on???
