Well, my problem is solved. I just shipped my S9 back to Amazon for a refund. I contacted Cowon yesterday via chat and was told that they couldn't help me. Then I tried submitting a trouble ticket and got back a response saying "it works for us, it should work for you". My D2 was my first experience with a Cowon product and that's a large part of what led me to purchase the S9 when I needed a new player. Now I guess I need to find a manufacturer who's interested in building a product that works properly and supporting it when it doesn't. So long Cowon.

I just loaded FW 2.41 and 4 albums worth of FLAC files and they all play just fine.
All my OGG files and audio books play fine too. I also downloaded the sample file in the OP and that played just fine...Not really my choice, but it did play... @BMT22033...I am not Flaming you or anything, but IIMHO you are bad mouthing Cowon for something that might just be a problem with the way your doing things. Maybe you should have tried using a easier program than EAC to rip your CD's. Not sure what you ripped them to and then why you converted them to FLAC...I rip my CD to FLAC and then convert them to the audio format I want. All my FLAC files and the format I converted them to play on all my Cowon players; iAudio X5, D2 loaded with D2+ FW and my S9. IMHO you should have given some of us more time to try and help you... Enjoy your new player what ever it might be, but you will not find a better music player than Cowon...

@Dalmane98 - I, too, downloaded the sample file in the OP and my S9 didn't see it. Just like it didn't see any of the FLAC files that I encoded. I use EAC to rip to WAV and from there, I encode into various formats depending on a number of things. In the case of FLAC encoding, I simply use "flac <wav_filename_here>". That's it. No adding or editing tags. And while my S9 didn't even see these FLAC files, my D2 sees and plays these very same FLAC files just fine. I also grabbed a number of FLAC files from Usenet to test with and my S9 never saw any of them but again, my trusty D2 played them with no problems. I tried different OS flavors, I tried MSC/MTP, I tried adding tags/removing tags, I tried transferring the FLAC files using JetAudio, etc., etc., all with no luck. It seems like most people aren't having this problem but there are a few people here (as well as over @ AnythingButIpod) that seem to be experiencing this behavior with their S9s. So given that I can't solve the problem and I haven't seen anyone else here that's been able to solve the problem, I thought it was reasonable to expect that Cowon would be interested in and able to help solve it. But in both attempts, they let me down. That leaves me feeling like they either don't believe that there is a problem or they don't care to investigate it for some reason. I'm happy that you're enjoying your S9. I hope it turns out to be everything you want it to be and it lasts for many years. But for me, the experience has been disappointing and unlike before, when I didn't really consider anyone *but* Cowon because of how great my D2 has been, I'm now looking for other alternatives.

Then get your S9 replaced...Must be a Hardware issue...
I provide tier level 3 & 4 tech support and know that dealing with level 1&2 can be a PITA... But please do not bad mouth a company for piss poor tech support...You might have b een dealing with an ID-10-T. I use my D2 more than I do the S9...In fact to be honest...Loading the FW and FLAC files for this thread is the first time I have listened to anything on my S9 it in over a month...It just takes up space on my desk... The D2 rocks IMHO, compared to the S9. Just my 2¢ worth of words...

Knowing that you provide tier 3/4 support for someone makes it a little more clear to me why you'd interpret my statements as "bad mouthing a company for poor support". If I, as a consumer of your employer's products or services, were able to contact you directly when I had a problem, you'd most likely be able to solve it or have the skills/knowledge to get it solved. But as you also know, there's a reason that companies have multiple levels of support. The people providing level 1 support are typically not paid as well as someone in your position nor are they particularly well trained beyond a "basic level" of troubleshooting. And, at the risk of offending any level 1 support people here, it has been my experience that many first level support reps are not particularly incentivized or motivated to go above and beyond what they've been trained to do. After all, if they did that, they'd either get promoted or leave and go somewhere else where their skills/knowledge would be better rewarded. In the end, it doesn't matter who a customer gets on the other end of their phone call, e-mail or chat session. If that person ultimately "solves" the problem, it reflects well on the company as a whole and if they don't... Sorry to hijack the thread like this. For those of you who are having this problem, I wish you the best of luck getting it resolved. |

as long as we're doing the respectful disagreement thing, I'd like to posit that if tech support quality is a direct reflection on any given company, I've only ever dealt with one company that wasn't a massive PoS...
as a freelance and sometimes contracted audio engineer, I deal with dozens of different pieces of equipment and software from dozens of different manufacturers, and have of course run across dozens of problems while using them. for pretty much every company I've ever had to call, I've got a memorized script I can run as soon as the level one support guy picks up the phone ("Hi, I've got a problem with __________, I've already tried [long list of troubleshooting procedures], can you connect me with a supervisor?") the only company that's ever provided me excellent, comprehensive service from the first point of contact is Extron, which I suspect is because their products are so complicated, cryptic and rough to manage even for experts.... anyway, just my two bits on calling for tech support. I'm really sorry you couldn't get your problem resolved, BMT - that's always frustrating, especially for expensive new gadgets that carry high expectations. |

Just out of curiosity, did you ever format your S9 (per tech support)? I thought about trying it as a last resort but was concerned that it might impact my ability to return it to Amazon so I decided against it. |

I don't have HD space to put S9 data(was being used as backup drive xD).
Reading this thread http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum...ad.php?t=42125 Seems like an easy process. And the system files will regenerate.

I was told by Cowon tech support that it's a firmware bug, to be fixed in the next (future) firmware update(s). Currently, the only solution is to shorten the four character extension (*.flac) to a three character extension (*.fla).
I just use a renaming utility, once I move the flac files to my S9. |

Hard to find solutions in the forum, but thanks for that "*.fla" answer that works just fine. Bought the S9 in large part for FLAC support, so it kind of made me sad (and mad) to know there were problems with it. Well, thanks again !
