Default Firmware flashing: does it wipeout all files?

I'm wondering if the O2 loses everything in its internal memory when doing a firmware update. If so, I'll most likely get an O2 with the smallest memory and store my media on SDHC cards.

If anyone can shed light on flashing and memory loss, I'd appreciate it

i'd assume the same will happen as the D2 does when accepting to update the Firmware. some versions do NOT remove the Data and some or most do. either way, it is still a good idea to back up your Photos, Music, and Videos or any Txts files you may have as well. remember... do NOT have the SD Card in while accepting to update. doing this can cause problems.

The manual says;
Back up any important data before the firmware upgrade as the data in the
memory may be deleted during the process. COWON is not responsible for any
loss of data, if not backed up.

That's weak, how come on my a2 I never lost any files while upgrading?
Does it have something to do with the flash memory?

that maybe so. that seems to be the case while upgrading with Flash based players but every Firmware is designed different so.

Thanks for the info, FURR I'm going to go with the 16GB O2 (since Jetmall.net doesn't have the 8GB) and go with a 32GB SDHC card.

It will probably take a long time to backup 32GB to the computer, flash the O2, then drag the files back again, so I won't keep too much media files on the internal memory.

Damm having to back up all my data even once every 2-3 months because of a firmware upgrade is going to be a major hassle.

If A2 or A3 doesn't delete the data when there is a FW upgrade then O2 doesn't do that either.
That warning by Cowon is the normal warning of any upgradeable device. Even PC programs show this kind of warning.
To be sure of this ask in A2/A3 forum about it.

Great to know, thanks Since the U3 and D2 players have everything on its internal memory wiped out when doing a proper firmware flashing, I'm used to backing up everything. I've always admired how iPod players don't lose anything during an upgrade, so it's good to see the O2 following suit

I can confirm this. It doesn't delete on upgrade so far for me either.

I updated my device from 1.09 to 1.11 after I got it today and it didn't wipe out any of the files.

Now that I own an O2, I'll also confirm that updating the firmware doesn't wipe out files. I just did the latest firmware, 1.12, and everything was OK. Also, all your settings are intact. Custom EQ, wallpaper... survives the update!
