Default Songs on "internal" and "external" memory

I'm seriously considering a D2. But I have concerns about adding songs to an external memory card.

I'd like to be able to play songs in shuffle/random mode regardless of where they are stored. Jumping from a song stored internally to one that is on a memory card.

Similarly, if I add a new album to the external card and the artist is already one whom I have songs from on the internal memory, I'd like to be able to play all the songs by that artist.

From some posts, I get the impression that the external memory appears as separate device -- just as it does in Windows when you connect the player via USB. I really don't want to have to play songs from artist A on the internal memory and then switch to the external memory to play more from the same artist.

As an added bit of information, I'm also giving thought to converting my music files to the Ogg Vorbis format (I've got a mixture of MP3 and WMA files now), basically re-ripping them from the original CDs. Is there any limit -- regarding the use of an external memory card -- with the Ogg Vorbis format as opposed to, say, a generic MP3 format?

Thanks in advance,
--
Darryl

Mixing ought to be possible with tag-browsing, never tried it.

The limit is 3,000 files, increased to 4,000 on new FW. You'll be close with big cards.

When browsing with the ID3 tag mode you can browse artists, albums, etc seamlessly, the int/ext memories shows as one.
If your browsing with the folder view the files and folders appears according to their physical location.

About OGG, there is no difference between internal or external but there is a track # tag sorting issue on some of the firmwares that I suggest you to look into before you re-rip all your files.

Vorbis works well. Tagging works well. Tagging Vorbis doesn't seem to work well, according to others on this site.

I use mostly Vorbis, but I listen mostly to the SD card. I keep the D2 main unit for recording space, pictures, selected videos, and a few selected CDs that I want to always have available. As recommended by others, I use file browsing for the ogg files, so the files are separate on the D2 and the external card.

Similar, I use it exclusively for new releases and occasionally other albums. I use FLAC so 4GB is a good size.
