macbook = ultimate chunky pmp? hurrrr...

in_flames: Yeah, that's how I feel, however every once in a while it's cool to be able to take out my d2 and watch a film or video that I've saved for the heck of things. Most of the time, though, I'd much rather listen to some Perfect Piano Lesson :B

If the only video you will watch is 4:3, then the D2 will work fine. If you are going to watch anything that is letterboxed, look at the A2.

If you are thinking of the A3 or Q5, you might as well also look at notebook computers. They have many more video codecs available, larger hard drives, and a DVD drive, just not as much battery life, for about the same price.

Default There're some Chinese brands

Recently one of my friends brought me a Gemei X 750 which I've never heard before, despite the average design, it has quite some interesting features:

2G flash, with expansion slot for up to 4G mini SD;
full support on FLAC and APE;
full support on RM/RMVB/AVI/FLV/MPG/MPEG/DAT, (no conversion is needed, though it might be a bit slow for extreme high rates);
16k colors screen;
speaker;
txt;
FM;
recording;
lyric;
JPG/BMP/GIF;
touch pad control;

Officially it says >=80db only so I guess the audio is not the best;
no av out;
USB 2.0 but it's on the slow side (just a bit better than 1.1);
strange 4:3 ratio screen stretched to 16:9;

Then I looked it up on the web and found its successor X 760, which looks different
with all features of 750 but this one does not use a touch pad, also 2G flash with expansion slot for up to 4G mini SD, plus
Two speakers for stereo output
support 16bit and some 32bit game emulation (MD, NES, SFC, GBA, NEO GEO);
3" 320×240 screen;
more powerful battery (vs X750) 1600mAH (25h audio,7h video)

The adapter is 220v so I think currently it's only for Chinese local market. the price is CNY780, about USD105. a 4G version is said to be available. They also have a Sony PSP like X790 thing to be come out later.

you can take a look here

It's also mentioned here

http://www.pmptoday.com/2007/07/28/g...hotos-at-last/

However, it's a small company and I'm not sure how far it will go finally, but they do provide more choices, at least I know that there're flash mp3 that can play most video formats without conversion.

The reason I brought this up is that I think soon some bigger companies in the market would produce small screen flash mp3 with AV-out, that can decode all formats of video, something like a D2 with built-in speaker and no need to convert anything.

^the main issue with these companies are two things that will profoundly effect value: build quality, and firmware support. I'd also mention a warranty, but that's something relative to companies' policies. The Meizu, though popular, has some major kinks that seem to be ignored in favor of newer products. For this reason, I'd be very weary of any small and notable Chinese company. Yes, every place has their own Coby or iPod rip-off, but even companies like Meizu, which are said to be quite good, have utterly failed in the service department.

4ki, yes you are absolutely right. I mentioned it just for the features but I don't recommend it nor Meizu at all. Quality is not good enough, not to mention the service.

I've just started to play with the Gemei X750, OMG, it cannot connect to the PC most of the time and I'm not the only lucky guy on their support forum.

I've bought a meizu m6 for my cousin early this year, it looks pretty, usable, with an above-average-bundled earbud. However, though they have a 1-year warranty, most of the earbuds will break very quickly around the connector (bad design, they have a new version said to be more robust, but I doubt it). The worse is, it's said that meizu now denies that they ever promised USB host (OTG) for m6, and bans anybody mentioning it on their forum. (OTG was listed as a feature-to-come before on their official website but now it's removed.) What an attitude!
