How good is the quality of music that is directly encoded? Does it take up more space than average files that are transported through a computer?

The quality depends on the bit rate you select. Other than that, I noticed a little bit of line buzz, but nothing terrible.
Not sure I understand your second question. The amount of space depends on the bit rate you select. If you choose a 192 kbps bit rate, you'll end up with the same amount of space as with any other 192 kbps bit rate file of the same duration you may have on your computer.

thanks pete, youve come through for me yet again. on the 2nd question i just wasnt sure if you selected the bit rate yourself, or if it had some sort of default that it made you use.

For line-in recording, you have several bit rate choices, from 64 to 256 kbps, or something like that - I can't remember now. But only one format - mp3.

From 64 to 320 for line-in or radio and from 32 to 128 for microphone.
It's found in options-->recording |
