Default Getting Tired

This is a rant, not a statement of policy.

You know, I grant that I've made bad decisions here in the past. I grant that part of being a Mod is expecting people to give you crap because you felt you had to take action against them as part of your job. I grant that people are going to take Warnings and Infractions personally even though 9 out of 10 times they're not worth the amount of energy that people imbue them with. And I grant that my preferred solution to the "please don't report spam threads" problem was not ideal for everyone.

That being said, when I come here and I see people putting snarky messages about reporting spam in their signatures, it really doesn't make me feel compelled to try to do my job any better.

When I came here I owned an X5 and an A2, I had a real interest in learning more about them, I was led to believe I might get some swag as a mod at some point, particularly if I ever did reviews, and I felt that this might be a community of people who were genuinely interested in helping each other out and having a good time. When I accepted the position as Mod I figured I'd be doing it with backup and that 95% of what I did would be maintenance such as moving threads to their proper forums.

Now I don't own an X5, I know everything I need to know about my A2, I have no intentions of buying another Cowon product, I've never even received a hint of swag (granted I've never reviewed a product either), my opinion of the community has taken some fairly serious hits, I've been called out here in public even by my co-moderator, and I spend 95% of my time here deleting spam. My co-moderator is without net access for an unknown amount of time, our administrator is absent, I don't have the ability to take steps that might really be worth taking to try to get some outstanding problems with the board resolved. But the worst part? When on top of that I'm still getting -personal- crap because people don't agree with my -professional- decisions but won't engage in a dialog with me about them, and when I have some serious Life crap going on outside of this board...

...you can see why, when I then get to read signatures where people snark at each other and decisions that the staff has made (not necessarily happily), my attitude just might feel like it's going to swing into "Well the heck with this, then" territory.

I looked at the current spam threads, I looked at people saying "When I reported spam threads in the past (a direct violation of existing policy at the time, which was easily readable) I got a Warning (ohnoes!) for it, so I'm never going to report anything again," and I wonder why I'm doing this to myself.

Quite seriously, I have had friends ask me, after hearing me talk about some of the headaches I've gotten here, why I'm still here. I'd like to have a better answer for them than "because I'm a masochistic moron who doesn't know when to cut his losses."

I'm done ranting now.

May be 2 moderators aren't enough to run a large forum as this?
Don't get me wrong, I do believe that the current moderators do their job decently enough, but seeing as how this forum has grown by leaps and bounds, may be just to reduce the burden on the current mods, someone with equivalent experience could reduce it?

At this point I'd love to have another moderator (even just for spam removal, though I also favor an odd number of mods to prevent potential "ties" on policy issues)...except AFAIK I can't give anyone that level of access to the system. Sigh.

Anywho, thanks guys. This has definitely become something I wasn't expecting it to be, and after reading the...material...I read yesterday, on top of other issues, the pick-me-up is greatly appreciated.

I sympathize, doniago. being a mod is a pretty lousy job in a lot of ways - hard to even do well, impossible to do in a way that makes everyone happy.

it never ceases to amaze me just how seriously people take web based forums.

it seems like you're in an especially tough position with an absentee admin - that's a really unfortunate situation.

Well, right now I'm basically holding down the fort single-handedly. Fun times.

I don't get people getting riled up about Warnings or Infractions -at all-. Seriously...you need 5 Infraction points to get banned for just 48 hours...and this place isn't going to change all that much in 48 hours. Most users get Warnings for bad behavior first, and an infinite number of those will never get you banned, so why throw a fit over them?

Now, if it was One Infraction = One Week Ban or something, I'd be a lot more understanding.

Anywho, thanks man. Really appreciate it.

Doniago, we can be annoying, but I hope you know most of us got your back. Yeah, we can be juvenile, but I hope not offensive.

As for putting comments about spam issues in the sig, that's a no-no IMO, so I don't agree w/others who would do that. I'd post an annoying comment in the appropriate thread, but not spam the forums w/an aggravating comment in my sig.

Like I said, most of us do have your back, and you do try,............that's the most any could ask.

I think we might actually owe you something, a trip to New Jersey perhaps,...... Wait, that's only if we didn't like you.

Why don't you just mod a few decent people? Taking some of the pressure of... I guess you do have access to the AdminCP, even if Austin and Dominic are MIA? Seems like nobody cares anyways, and you don't have anything to lose either way on this sinking ship.

AFAIK, I can't. I'll be verifying that at some point, but last time I checked I believe I was locked out of those portions of the CP.

Thanks Tirim, and everyone else. Feeling a bit better about things now.

THATS the WORST sentiment I have EVER seen expressed on this site, bar none. I'm embarrased to have read that.

Agreed. Even though we don't have a large community, we are a group of people that are interested in discussing portable audio. There's 126 active users at the time of this post, and 3,536 active members, I think that's a decent size community. It's been growing..slowly, but surely, and there's always something to talk about.

Of all the forums Im a member of here in the inter web iAudiophile is by far the nicest and I allways come here with pleasure. Just the fact that people don't have signatures that are half a page long and filled with blinking gif animatios is awesome. The fact that its such a concentrated forum with 99% iaudio stuff makes it free of most fanboyism (I mean, most of us are kinda of fanboys, but we mosly doesn't have to deal with fans of other brands). I think most people appreciates your work, even if it might not seem like that sometimes. Manny pople have bad things to say about the government or the police, but imagine how it would be without them, and remember that they are people too, making human decisions.

Ive never seen you admins make a completley sensless descision, and never have I seen you be rude to another member. Thats something you cant say about manny here on the big net. I see the difficulty in running this place with all its problems, and whatever decision you take about this site Ill fully unerstand it.
The obvious first thing to try is ofc to get some new mods, but that seems to be rather hard right now so I guess we'll have to wait and see.
