Well we should really be happy. The original D2 was released over three years ago and we still get fw-updates! Ofc the D2+ was released only about a year ago, but it still kinda got all the originl D2 updates and Id be very suprised if it got a fw update with nothing more then bug-fixes and small tweaks.

Cowon D2+ is not dead! ![]() I'll install it, and then post impressions. Thanks Cowon! EDIT: Before installation... Which one should I install? Is it like 2.11 -> 2.13 (Audiable support) and 3.11 -> 3.13 (dictionary and flash skins)? EDIT(2): I couldn't wait so I've installed 3.13. It runs smoother than 3.11 (especially in Music Browser), and I think they fixed that bug when player exits browser before it's five second timer... Rockbox can't boot, but I'll fix it somehow. Two things that I don't know whether they're truth are sound and icons. Soundstage is a bit bigger with slightly better trebles, and bass bit weaker (or more balanced). I can't tell details, but that's my first impression. About virtual click icons (shuffle, music list, DPL etc.), are they smaller or changing wallpaper from user to default made me think like that? ![]()

Isn't useless, the bug in the FLAC tags visualization when [ALBUM ARTIST] is present has been fixed. Finally

![]() ![]() ![]() Sadly I do have a bit of noise despite a fair bit of shielding, but most of it is pretty far below my hearing threshold anyway and it's low enough to not significantly affect this test. Definitely a pretty even response overall with only a tiny bit of rolloff way below normal ranges even for a subwoofer or high end headphones -- it doesn't start with any rolloff until around 34Hz and at 8Hz, which is the absolute lowest that almost anything can reproduce it's still only -0.48dB. (It is my understanding that people aren't even supposed to be able to hear volume changes of less than something like 1.5dB or so.) Note that this is with all sound modifications disabled (the way I prefer it.) Flat EQ, no Mach3Bass+, and so on. (And btw, to those who don't like the bass the way it is, but don't like Mach3Bass+, have you tried just tweaking the EQ to your preferences? IMO it's better start from neutral and make any changes you want from there than to start from a bias and have to work your way towards neutral. In particular, if you have just the right sound system, you want a neutral input so the sound system does what it does best.) I'm not quite 100% sure which is the culprit in the 0.05dB discrepancy between channels. As I said, my setup is not perfect by any means. Note that I have the D2 which I've flashed to a D2+ firmware. If there are ANY differences in hardware -- even a different DAC/OPAMP for example -- these results might be useless. Sorry, I couldn't really test low impedances to see if the firmware in any way compensates for the bass rolloff issue, but chances are you still need an impedance adapter to fix that with low impedance IEMs and headphones. (Kind of annoying for me since my D2 can manage to drive my Denon AH-D2000s only just enough on its own. When I add an impedance adapter of sufficient value it no longer has enough juice for them. Well, I have a great amp, but it's annoying to have to have the amp as well on a player that I know is capable of driving the super-high impedance Sennheisers well...) Anyway, I'm very much enjoying this firmware on my D2.

However I assume that when installing it I will loose Rockbox. I tried Rockbox again and until now everything goes fine. Moreover I used the "Cassini" version of the Rockbox patched firmware (keeping the removed text under the icons in Cowon firmware). Doing the patching myself looks too complicated for me. |
